Wedding magazines: yay or nay?

Hi wedding moneysavers. I was just wondering, have you found wedding magazines helpful? I'm not the most creative of people so could really do with some pointers but the magazines are so expensive. Are they worth it?

nay!
The majority of info they provide is available on the internet and i also think they are a waste of money!0 -
Nay! They're very much of the 'should do' school when it comes to weddings which I hate, and try and encourage you to spend as much as possible. There's an 'alternative' one, Black something, that may have some unusual weddings but they still cost a packet and the magazine didn't acknowledge that people do get married on a budget. I was disappointed with it, as I was with the Martha Stewart weddings magazine, I thought it might have lots of crafty things and pretty real life weddings. It had even more adverts than the UK wedding magazines.
Get down to your library and reserve some nice wedding books there. I got some beautiful ones out for inspiration, there's some with gorgeous photos. The internet is great too, my favourite wedding sites are Style Me Pretty and Offbeat Bride, both US based though.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

I picked up over twenty of them for a quid at a car boot sale, otherwise I definitely would NOT have bothered. The dresses in there are around £1200 - £3000, when you consider the price of the mags each are anything up to around £4.00 or so, not worth it. There's nothing in them that was remotely money saving what so ever (unless you count one article that was amazingly going to bring in your wedding for under £10,000....) So they wouldn't help towards a MSE style wedding.
If you get them for nothing, passed on, great. If not don't but them. My bridesmaid dress cost less than one magazine. Honestly!0 -
Both , they are a waste but i could not help my self but buy a few , but i stopped when i brought 4 in one month . i dont think they are very good at keeping you grounded they just encourage you to spend spend spend ........0

If you see this thread it directs you to an offer on the telegraph website where it advises you of a special code where you can download 3 free magazines from here 1 of which is 1 of which is Cosmo bride and the other is You and your wedding. Not the same as a real copy but it willgive you a good idea what they are like (and how MANY ad's they are full of) I recently bought a Scottish 1 as I had a smiths voucher it was so bloomin heavy my arm ached from lugging it home form town & I didn't feel I got that many ideas from it.Booo!!!0

Nay - admin lady at work buys them. I read at dinner and photo copy and bring home the good bits, or jot down ideas in my wedding idea book. Tight.....? Me....? Yes indeed! And everyone knows it!0

TBH, I bought 2, just coz I'd gotten engaged and was dead excited in Tesco's (didn't get engaged in Tesco, FYI, - just went there soon after)
They are good for 'ooohing and ahhhing' but I find that this forum is great for ideas and helpful hints - especially on a budget. You can also get ideas from sites such as THIS or the likes of 'You and Your Wedding' but nowhere is as nice as here!
I used Brides.com to figure out what kinda dress would suit my body shape, so that was quite helpful too. I'd never have discovered Landy though without this site.
Happy planning!

I agree with the above - be warned they are also addictive. I had a pact that i wuldn't buy any as its all available online by oh mum got all excited and bought me one - i have since bought 3 but will not be buying any more if i can help it. in my defence i bought 2 to keep me occupied whilst i ws on 2 4hr train journeys.
I wanted it to look at styles of dresses but they are all v expensive except the alfred angelo ones. got very few ideas that I haven't got from the your and your wedding site + forum or confetti. i'm glad i got a few cos they are all part of it and i am gonna cut out pics and decorate my wedding folder, scrap book and box with them,Had a thrifty wedding 17-06-10

I bought quite a few when I first got engaged in 2006! I found that the most useful one was 'wedding ideas' - not as expensive, got lots of real weddings and lots of ideas and the desses etc that are featured are not too pricey! I must say though that since I have actually been 'planning' so to speak I have not even looked at any! I had probably gotten caught up in the excitement of it all when I first got engaged!
Finally decided to start growing up when it comes to money!:j
