My mum is coming next year ... everythings will be quite new to her, do they speak in english ? they will ask many questions from them unless they have a "big" bank account. Do you know if the need tourist visas to make everything easier ? Went i came over here in 2005 i did not need one, came with an invitation letter.. they had me for 3 hs in detenion as they were trying to find out everything about me ( no bank accounts, no cards.. i had no money, my bf invited me over).

Last time i checked you can get one paying for £30 i think if you have family here, just to make the process straighforward i will get one for my mun as she can not speak in english and they can be quite intimidating.
You're right, they can be very intimidating. My hubby's English is excellent but he still found himself stuttering and stammering when they were "grilling" him. He had an invitation letter from me that first time, i'd not heard of a tourist visa, i'll have to look into that. My father-in-law speaks a little English, but mother-in-law speaks none at all and no, they're not rich! They're lovely and i'd hate for them to have trouble on their first visit.
I hope things go well for your mum too, she's very brave if she's coming over on her own!:T

Yes, they treat you like you have done something wrong ! i could not understand them, and when they took me into detention with lots of people, sleeping.. watching telly... I started crying.. i was only 20 yo, first time away from home and i did not know what was going on, a guy took me to a room and took a pic of me.. i felt like a criminal... it was horrible.. they were doing their job but i had no idea what was happening....after that a nice person came to talk to me... and he decided to let me go, and asked me where the wedding will be... i said, in my country of course.. you all treated me really bad , i was kidding!
If it is possible, and you don't live in London, try to make them arrive to Manchester or any other airport than Heathrow... they will be nicer and as long as they have everything in order.. they will be ok.
