I know,,,its quite incredible isnt it? Especially when you contrast yours and similar situations with the hoards of migrants who blag their way into the UK from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, seemingly with little difficulty.

Totally untrue! The process is exactly the same in Asia and Africa, but in practice the embassy staff are stricter and there are longer waits for applications to be processed. People from EU countries (some of which are in Eastern Europe) do not have to apply for visas, but EU membership is a two-way street that also gives Britain many advantages.

When I got my ILR (I'm American, DH is British), it took about 4 wks to get it back. We were a bit horrified at all the paperwork required, but we went the route of sending extra paperwork in case a few things were deemed to be "not what they wanted" so there was still plenty of documentation to choose from. I am a bit anal about that type of thing, so I put it all in a binder, with labeled tabs, so they could find it all easier. I also kept of a photocopy of each and every item I sent in. That was a couple years ago, as (luckily) my ILR application was due the month prior to the horrendous price rise to £750.

I do sympathise with you on the price, though, as we would love to get my citizenship done and dusted, but simply do not have the £1000 spare right now to do so. I honestly think that with such a huge price on the ILR, since that's when you really have to do all the documentation (the citizenship application doesn't need nearly the amount of documentation as the ILR), that the citizenship should be less expensive. I also was quite frustrated at the referees requested for the citizenship - one of them must be on their list of "professionals" that have to have known you for the last 3 yrs. Problem is, most medical professionals are not going to want to put themselves forward unless they are a close friend. I guess most of the people we know are working class. LOL We have a few acquaintances that are on the "professionals" list, but we don't know them well enough to be comfortable asking them to be a referee for this, as they have to provide their info as well - and who wants to do that??

Actually the largest amount of illegal immigrants into the UK are from australia, new zealand and america.

I's worry about those before complaining about legal migrants.

After are we should stay british - our celtic german french roman blood should not be diluted.

Good luck with the visa OP

You can get another passport, as pointed out already, if the delay gets that bad. not much consolation over the frustration, but would remove the immediate worry at least.

It's a nightmare, did the Indefinite leave to remain last year, saving up for citizenship this year.

    Good luck everyone.

what the??? I hope this is a joke? (where do you think many Australians came from in the first place?)
But yes, on topic, the whole visa thing is a right pain in the backside - we'll be going through it soon for my British hubby-to-be, for Australia.

Dammit, now have to research where that link is from...not actually a joke..... it was no offence meant - I gather the situation is mutual (e.g. uk people staying there when visas have run out)

I just get fed up of the speel at 'non white' migrants that we hear when they aren't the majority of migrants

I sent off the documentation for my children's Candian citizenship certificates back in January.

I thought they were kidding when they said the process will take about 9 months. Apparently not. I can't understand why something like this would take so long when you've provided all the correct, legal, original documentation.

It seems like Canada aren't the only slow coaches then.......
