Car finance while on benefits

I would love to have a £5k car (I would love to own a car full stop, we are currently carless). I have never owned a car that cost me £5k, in fact all the cars I have ever brought together would not reach £5k.
I worked for twenty years and I could not afford to spend that much on a motor, the OP is on benefits and can?
Something is wrong with our benefits system.0 -
Benefits should never exceed the amount which can be earned working full time on minimum wage.
If it does, why work at all when there is better money to be made avoiding work (a generic statement, no dig at the OP intended)0 -
hi,
I have an S Reg ford galaxy, its got a few scratches & scrapes, about 100,000 miles on the clock but still a great car with plenty of room for car seats, plus buggy, dog etc, ours is worth about £1000, i'd recommend it.
Reserve £1000 for things that could go wrong with the car & spend the rest on something more interesting- or of course, be sensible & save it !
Also, Toyota Previas are very good, often used as taxis & then sold when milage gets high.
good luck0 -

I receive over £2500 in benefits a month, i have 2 children with cystic fibrosis and cant work because my days are spent giving medication, physiotherapy and tending to their needs. it is by far the most difficult and time consuming job i have ever had and without the governments current benefit system our family wouldn't survive. Just to keep our house at a constant temperature costs us over £50 a week, trips backwards and forwards to hospital which require a car aren't cheap. we need to spend almost £200 a week just to cater for special dietary needs.
we manage to survive thanks to the money we receive. please don't discriminate against people on benefits as in the majority of cases the money they receive is much needed and unobtainable in any other way.0 -
why on earth are you bringing up such an old thread to troll perhaps ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

stumbled across it from a Google search actually. problem with that? if there was a problem with looking at older threads they wouldn't be here.
i don't want to get into an argument i was just stating that i disagree with some of the things said in this discussion.0 -
the end of the day as said the only reason to get car finance for a newish car is because you want a nice car to show off ect, now at the min i`m on benefits after not being able to work for the last 6 months, i do want a nice car and will be going to get 1 on finance but not until i find a job that is secure and i`ll be looking at spending £4000 max, but for now i`ve got a 2001 ford mondeo ghia which only cost me £570 with a full mot and its a great car its got alot of spec and still nice to drive and still feels modern inside and i`ve not had to spend anything on it for repairs so that just proves the point being made by some that you can get a nice car for alot under a grand
and also remember benefits can be stopped at any time if they think you not entitled to them for whatever reason0
