Hmm what an excellent theory. Pity it dosen't work like that in reality.

Credit is not a right, as children if we wanted something we saved up for it, why can't adults do the same thing?

The OP was credit based on benefits that could be taken away, how then would she pay?

There has been a lot of good advice ignored by the OP, because she particularly wants one make and model, when others are available.

Although we should be kind to money savers, is it kinder to tell the OP how to get into debt she may not be able to repay, or tell her not to borrow so much and look for a different car?

If people can afford £200 a month repayments, why can't they save £200 a month for five months and buy a £1K banger??

Most people want a £5K motor and don't consider the repayments, just the car, a car, a NEW CAR!!

Saving has been etched out of our way of living due to the ease of plastic and credit over the last 20 years (the Devil didn't make you do it, you did it yourself!) :)

Got to disagree with you there, I feel far safer in a new car than a banger, every year they make improvements in car safety & the newer your car the better the road handling & crash protection. I certainly wouldn't feel that safe in a banger.

Plus reliability is a major issue, I live in a village, the transport to my place of work is appalling. I need to go out in the morning & have my car start, EVERY morning, my finances would take a major knock if I couldn't get to work.

However I cannot understand how people on benefits can afford to run cars or buy fairly good ones, cars are expensive to run:confused:

I work full time as a benefit processor and there are customers who receive 4x plus in benefits than I earn, so don't assume people on benefits can't afford luxuries, some of them have more disposable income than I'll ever have.
I'm not suggesting that this applies to the OP though.

nearly all the people where i work have cars over 5 years old most of them a lot older, there is no reason to buy a new car except for snob value

Perhaps it is time that the government took measures to reduce benefits if people really can afford to buy cars on finance with them.

I find the argument that older cars are unsafe amusing... If that was the case, then 8 or 9 years ago no family would have ever bought brand a new car because they aren't safe enough!

The most important safety factor in any vehicle is the " nut " behind the wheel.

My OH gets near enough the same money in benefits as I do working 40 hours a week.
