It's against the law to do so, so it is likely they would call the police.
  • Yeah used to do it all the time. I used to have a fuel card and was always leaving it trouser pockets, usually not the ones i was wearing!!! Basically they just take all your details, reg no etc and ask you to come back within 24hrs to pay.

To short cut this process i left my mobile phone once while i nipped home to get my card.

I suppose technically the could call the police but unless you look like a complete !!!!! i would say from personal experience its unlikely.

It's clearly not against the law if it's unintentional. What I'm wondering is what policy Tesco adopt to such cases.

If you go to the kiosk and explain and can produce suitable identification.

    You will have no problem.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Been there, done that! It must happen quite regularly as they had a form to complete. Gave my name and address details, registration no. and they gave me 24 hours to pay. Could have helped that I was local to the filling station

It's definitely not against the law not to have the means to pay, despite what any notice on the pump might say, particulary if it is an honest mistake. Not having the means to pay with the intent of avoiding payment probably would be.
  • my mum did it, just wanted some id and wanted her to come back and pay

Beware though, it can lead to bad credit rating. If not paid back, it is sent to debt recovery, and that £10 can lead to CCJs etc against you.

My bro did that once at Tesco's.

He had to fill out a form with name, address, car reg etc and had to come back in 24 hours to pay. All petrol forecourts are covered in CCTV, so if you didnt bother going back top pay you would soon be found....

A similar thing happened to me, my card was declined and I didn't have any cash on me. They took all my details (Esso garage) and I believe the form said I had 7 days to pay. I drove to a cash machine and went back within 30mins. My bank then denied all knowledge of that transaction and claimed they didn't decline anything...
