I think some people are just ignorant why people need IVF and ICSI. They dont realise that infertilty is caused by error, illness and not just one of those things!!
I think unless they walk in our shoes then they have no right what so ever to comment.
Hope your cancer is in remission xxTRYING hard to be a good money saver :rolleyes:0 -
for goodness sake will everyone get a grip.
Like most things in life there is no black and white answers, just varying shades of grey.
IVF has a huge emotive issue around it - for those of you who need it , there would be no question that treatment should be funded and to hell with those whose life style choices have caused their condition.....although I always raise a smile when people mention type 2 diabetes as I'm not sure what Steven Redgrave chose to do that would be considered unhealthy!
The trouble is is that medical advances have not developed at the same rate as funding for the NHS .....I am sure that if you had predicted in the 1940's at the birth of the NHS 1% of what can be achieved these days then you would have been called mad.
In addition to this there are huge differences in the success rates of IVF treatment between those carried out on the NHS and in the private sector (and even rates within the private sectoor vary widely)
To the OP - While I sympathise with your situation what good would it do for someone out of the area to petition Oxfordshire PCT? It would be far more benefical to make this a local campaign.2014 Target;

would you change your tone if you knew i have buried 3 of mine !
Its not a competition to see who needs a child the most.
And to the person who thinks we should all adopt--why didnt you before you chose to have children???
I didn;t make it a competition, but you made it personal. We clearly don;t agree on this, but I still say that we don;t have a right to have children, and if you can;t have them for whatever reason then if you can pay for IVF, etc., yourself then that's your choice, but if you can't, then I don't think the taxpayer should have to fund it.
I know you won;t like that viewpoint, but it's the one I hold.
I also don't actually agree with IVF, etc., anyway, for various reasons, but I suspect you'd find some of them upsetting so I won't go into them.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Hi Elaine, I know we're not going to agree on this, but I just wanted to say that it is not ignorance that forms my opinion. I understand that there are a myriad of reasons as to why some people will seek IVF, but I firmly believe that life begins at conception, not arbitrarily at some other point. I think that the extra embryos (which are the casualties of IVF) deserve a chance at life and it is for this reason (rather than cost to the NHS) that I disagree with IVF: regardless of people's individual circumstances, however tragic they may be.0

Of course life begins at conception. Peoples ignorance think there are lots of embryos flushed away. I had 2 embryos on my last cycle--one is my dd and the other one was her dead twin .
Anyway I have better things to do than argue--i couldnt careless whether you agree or not--I pay my taxes like everyone else -therefore ivf should be available for all that do.TRYING hard to be a good money saver :rolleyes:0 -

Infertility is not a lifestyle choice and if left untreated in many cases it can end up costing the NHS more in the long run.
As someone with mental health problems I live a constant fight for an acceptable level of NHS treatment, and have done so for years. I also desperately want a baby. However, my yearning to have a baby will not kill me. My mental health problems may well.
Where do I think the money should go? :rolleyes:
elainew, the old 'I pay my taxes like everyone else' argument shows that you do not really understand the economy and the way that public finances are administered. A more intelligent way of thinking would be 'infinite wants, limited resources'.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Totally agree with that. Took me 8 years to get a referal to a pyschiatrist. That is far too long. I'm now on a waiting list for Pyschotherapy, when I hit the top of the list, I'll be 24. I was 12 when I first sought help. 12 years to wait for therapy is a very, very long time. It isn't uncommon for people to struggle to access proper mental health care.
In my area, there in one Eating Disorders unit. They can only take people suffering from anorexia or bulimia, with a BMI of under 14. They cannot offer any support to only slightly underweight, normal or overweight sufferers. With a BMI of 45, I wasn't able to get any help.
The waiting lists for Pyschology, DBT and CBT are closed here - they haven't added anyone new to the lists for 2 years.
While infertility is really very, very awful, it doesn't kill you. I'd rather money went to services that save lives.Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0
