I give up...
OK OP follow the other people's advice. Insist on paypal, pay all the charges and don;t forget to keep all proof of dleivery etc for 6 months as that is how long a chargeback for fraudulent use of a card can take to be raised. Forget about lovely safe bank transfers with no fees and no danger of any sort of chargeback.
Goodness, I can only assume people keep their cheque books in a safety deposit or burn them under armed guard for all the misunderstanding about the dangers of a bank account and sort code.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Soolin - I don't see your point. Are you for or against cheques?0 -
The point is that every time you write a cheque you give out your bank deatails. So telling someone your bank deatails is a reasonable thing to do as is accepting cash on the door step.0

Taking cash at your front door when you're not used to doing that is also not a pleasant experience (unless you can look after yourself) I'd ask him to send you a cheque and wait for it to clear
WALOB!
ALl you are giving out is your name, acc no and sort code. The same info you supply for every DD that you set up or have printed on every cheque.
In fact, taking it to the extreme, what if they use a stolen cheque book to pay? This could be recalled days or weeks after it has cleared!
Actually, I think you are sitting close enough to your computer to have you pockets picked by the evil eBay sellers as well!0 -

I have nothing against cheques at all and have made no comment about them either way. My frustration is with people who do not understand how bank transfers work. In fact if you don't trust bank transfers the point is you should mistrust cheques even more as like fay says these also carry your signature as well as your sort code and bank account number.
If I were selling a laptop I would love to be offered a bank transfer, or failing that a cheque, it saves chargeback problems and also a hefty amount of fees.
I am often accused on here of being too quick to defend paypal, and whilst I believe paypal is safe as long as oyu know how to use it I still believe from a sellers point of view that it is the least safe of the payment methods.
If this had been a thread written by the buyer I would first to insist they pay only by paypal and discount any other form of payment entirely.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Well me and Mrs Moc can go our way and the rest can go their's. I think we should all go home and have a cup of tea and put our feet up!
But I don' think anyone can deny that the buyer is a bit of a pain for not letting the seller know his intentions before he bought the laptop.
And don't take cash at the door or let strangers from ebay into your house - that can't be a good thing to do unless you are Grant Mitchell!!!0
