Am I dealing with a scammer?

I sold a broken laptop on eBay for £100. The seller contacted me shortly after auction end with 'I haven't added my new bank account to my Paypal, it will take 3-4 days, can I pay by bank transfer?' We said that we'd be happy to wait 3-4 days. Then he responded with 'I can come and pick it up and pay cash on collection, including the postage so you don't lose out?' I've checked his feedback and he previously bought three items but all of these were well over a year ago. Am I right to be a bit suspicious?

  • Let him come and pick it up, check the cash is legit and all's good.
Im unsure why he says he would pick it up and pay you the postage though.(you would hardly be losing out as you would have to use the postage money to post it!)

I'm obviously missing what you feel is wrong here.

Bank transfers are a sellers delight, no way they can be recalled at all, as for cash as long as you check the notes are good how can you be scammed?

Selling a laptop without paypal is surely every sellers dream?

So someone wants to do a bank transfer and you say no and then they want to give you cash and you worry?

Hmm, it just seemed a bit unusual for me so I wondered whether I was being scammed.

  • I can see why you might be suspicious! Giving out bank details is not a good idea and all those people who posted above are on the road to loosing money at some point! Taking cash at your front door when you're not used to doing that is also not a pleasant experience (unless you can look after yourself) I'd ask him to send you a cheque and wait for it to clear

Oh please, not the old 'I don't understand how bank accounts and a direct debt garantee work' post. I thought that had all been laid to rest now.

OP ignore this, a bank transfer is fine.

I have to agree that you shouldnt give out your bank details either!

What were your payment instructions on the listings as this is what the buyer should stick to.
