Update: I have used the BT speedtest wizzard a few times. During the day I'm getting a throughput of appox 6.5mbps. In the evening this falls to around 2.5mbps. I accept that contention is the problem but I don't accept that the degredation in performance is acceptable. Anyone else have the same issue?

We were with o2 on the access package since October. We too were experiencing terrible speeds evenings and weekends. We were also in a 12 month contract.

We couldn't put up with it any longer and moved a couple of weeks ago, also to IDNet and absolutely no complaints. What a difference.

We have gone from an average of 300kbs speed to 4.5mbs speed.

As the other posters have said it is very true you get what you pay for and we will never go back to any of the big providers.

As well as IDNet take a look at AAISP, also not the cheapest but they do give an excellent service. Take a look at what they say on their web site about people with poor BT lines. They will do their best to give you a good broadband connection.

Maybe they are limiting the speeds at certain times due to many people abusing P2P software ect

I have spoken to BT today. They don't agree that a 50% reduction in throughput constitues a degradition in performance. I guess like a lot of other people who don't have any Local Loop Unbundled (LLU) providers at their exchange there's nothing I can do. In doing my research I found the samknows website very informative.

The BT Broadband team should have pointed out that the connection gets slower at peak times due to the number of people on the network in your area.
May be worth geting them to review the call to make sure they did.

The wording "Up to" is grating people as users should be able to get a greater picture of the speed available before they sign up.

If this was the case then the user could argue for compensation for breach of contract.

It has been mentioned on consumer progs BUT don't know how far it will go!!!

You can leave BT and use a decent ISP, they don't have to be LLU to give consistant speeds.

As I have stated, my speed never slows down, I am not with an LLU supplier.

Inactive, thanks for the advice. If I use another ISP in a non LLU situation don't they have to route through the same equipment in the exchange?

Indeed they do, however the routing then goes via the ISP, trust me, my speed never slows day or night, my neighbour's crawls to a near halt at around teatime, he uses BT for his ISP, unfortunately he is stitched in by a long contract with BT.

    Clearly not an exchange issue.
