Rip Off Broadband - BT

I'll get straight to the point. My broadband works fine during week days when most people are at work and kids are at school. By 4pm my connection becomes almost unusable - constantly waiting for screens to update and downloads become very slow. Talking to friends and colleagues this seems to be universally true regardless of ISP.

Maybe if enough people start to make some noise about this Martin might champion our cause and get the ISP's do do something about it.

Even if there is no immediate solution, the ISP's should reduce their fees for sub-standard performance.

I had a quick look around the forums and couldn't find any other postings on the same subject.

It would help if you told us who your isp was and what BB package you have with them. Do you use a USB modem or ethernet?

You need to name the ISp your having prblems with. It is not 'universal' at all. My current ISP IDNET are great (if expensive at £25 per month).

I suspect your with Tiscali which would explain why your experience is rubbish.

I'm with BTInternet and I use an ethernet connection. I use a Belkin modem / router. Laptop access via WiFi and desktop via a cat5 cable.

Unfotunately my local BT exchange isn't served by any LLU providers.

i'm having this exact problem, but with Orange. I'm currently exchanging emails and if the situation isn't rectified soon, i'll be changing providers.

(been with them for years and it's only the last few weeks i am having this problem).

Well I'd say that first of all you need to be really sure that its the connection and not something else. If your happy that its the connection and that its an ongoing problem then raise the issue with BT and see if they can provide a fix or refund/discount. Failing that, see if you can move providers?

Aren't all BT broadband products on a min term contract, though? Depending how far they are into one, moving away could be a very expensive option.

I am with IDNet, no long term contract, no slow down of speed at any time, day or night.

Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. ( or not with BT ).

Plenty of ISPs are fast 24/7. I can download full pelt all day every day if I want to. I'm on an offer Be* did where you get the first 6 months on the bottom package free, so at the mo I can do 8mbit, or ~900KB/sec.

When I upgrade to the top package, it'll be something nearer 2.7MB/sec.

BT are notorious for oversubscribing their network. Them and Tiscali are terrible for it, as are Virgin Media in certain areas.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

With you werdnap. I was with Tiscali but now with O2. Much better service but have always had the same problem with both ISP's when schools close down. Same when "Corrie" isn't on ! I live about 2 miles from the exchange in a commuter village (no cable supply) but the exchange is in a highly populated area. Just volume of use so I just have a brew and go back later. Not a connection problem as I have lived in two houses in this village.

No, they should increase their fees, not lower them. Charge a realistic sum and kick thieving, freeloading hogs off.
