Meat prices are the highest we have seen for a LONG time, the French have big problems with Blue Tongue pushing our lamb prices higher, believe it or not but they actually like our lamb!!!

Beef is also up because of the TB problem which no-one in the Govt. is prepared to face up to the truth and deal with, hence great swathes of cattle have been sent for early slaughter because they show signs of TB and in several cases they have been opened up to find nothing wrong.....the knock-on effect is that beef supplies are very low.....just drive throught Somerset now and see how many fields are just left abandoned - a sign that dairy farming has been dealt the death-knell.

If you are going to invest in stock you need a good farmer who does it because it is his 'life', history shows that co-operative farms run by accountants never make big money

edit: please also remember that it's not just a case of buying 'store' (unfinished) cattle at 12mths old then selling them in 18mths time, they need feeding, attention, medication & housing

    Hello

I wasn't planning to invest in it. it struck me as an unusual investment when I read about it and was curious.

Live stock is a valid commodity. If you trade the CRB then part will be in cattle, precious metals and so on. Trading just one commodity is pretty risky by itself

Its not ususual though afaik. Its prospects are related to emerging markets, if a country grows richer they will eat more chickens vs keeping them for eggs as was true in the uk previously

I was heavily involved in all aspects of the meat trade for over 25 years, from farming through wholesale to retail & can assure anyone that the only time that it was really good was when food rationing was in place (before my time). Customers were so grateful then.Regards,N.

Here is a article based on research by Standard Chartered on why agriculture is a better investment then the banks or even gold and oil.
Rings true imo and matches prospects shown on charts also

Surely, if you wanted to breed for profit, rabbits would bring a quicker return?
EU have been skewing the market for 40 years
    I take it that's a mis-spelling?

    Gold looks a good investment!

Moderators, this poster is obviously bonkers.
If anybody had taken their advice at the time, they would be up 45 pounds an ounce.
I think that sabretoothtigger should be banned at once for this trolling bounce.
Shut the thread down immediately, before the bovine scatology gets out of hand, and the usual suspects flame the thread.
