Investing in cattle...

Options
Hello

I know this sounds like a strange one and it is but I was reading a biography of a very famous celebrity who was also a shrewd businessman and he invested in cattle of all things. This is going back 40-50 years.

Just out of curiousity, is this something that still goes on and, if so, how does it work?

with the value of the pound falling against the Euro ..Investing in British cattle would probably bring a good return ...I just don't know how you could invest ,other than owning some.

It was definitely cattle, he owned huge herds of them.

How do you make money out of this? Do you sell at a profit or breed them?

Don't know much about it but I've noticed this ETC (exchange traded commodity) - http://www.etfsecurities.com/csl/classic/etfs_live_cattle.asp

Investing in cattle 50 years ago would have made you an easy million but now due to the market around the world this will not be a good investment. But who knows? I bet someone told that man 50 years ago that he was stupid. But people have to take risks!

Ostrich? LOL. Maybe you are right!

That's because commodities fall in price during a recession as industry needs less. The only exceptions tend to be those used as a safe haven for savings (particularly gold).

However if you believe we have reached the bottom of the resession (I don't but some do) then it would be a good time to buy.
