Does anyone know where I can get a BT sim card?

I don't think you can get a SIM card per se, hence the comments in my post above.

I stand to be corrected but BT Mobile seems to be either contract only, or PAYG as part of some other BT package.

Correct, and O2 is owned by Telefonica ( Spain ).
