Same DISPLAY setup page. Theres one for settings up the screen resolution (Which youve used). Underneath that theres RGB FULL or LIMITED (Should be limited)
And SUPERWHITE ON or OFF (Should be off)

I'm not disputingt what you say at all but on my system mine is set to superwhite on and rgb full......and i can set the 1080p resolution no problem.
I will admit though that when watching blu rays i sometimes think the picture isn't as good as it should be. The TV didn't cost a fortune (Toshiba 1080p LCD) so i always thought it was simply a cheaper end TV.

    Are my settings wrong too?
    thanks

99.9% of all people on this site with tvs will NOT have capabilities of displaying FULL rgb. So yes it SHOULD work anyways, but what youve done is CLIP the extreme blacks and whites. What this means is your missing parts of the picture detail. It will look a bit more 'colourful', but your not seeing things as they should be seen.
Superwhite ill have to double check on as it only effects at certain places

i have noticed something on mine related to this. i set it to limited like rik advised. however within the tvs menu i cant change the hdmi black level. according to the tvs booklet the hdmi signal has to be rgb for me to be able to change the hdmi black level.
i know people will say it doesnt matter coz its best set at normal. my experience is that i prefer the picture when it is set at low. i guess i should try it set at full rgb and see if i can change the hdmi black level.

by the way it seems the issue has nothing to do with the settings. it is something to do with the cable. when i tried a different cable it let me tick 1080p. after watching a blu ray i thought now i have 1080p ticked i will turn everything off and change back to the first cable to see what would happen. the screen came on ok and a blu ray played ok although i dont know if i was still getting 1080p due to the dodgyness of the cable. one thing i noticed with the first cable connected again is that there is a slight snowyness on the ps3 menu screen. its a bit like when a tv is slightly out of tune.

is the official ps3 hdmi cable a decent performer?

A tv is either 'calibrated' or it isnt
However ~ all blurays and dvds are in YCBCR. If your PS3 isnt set to AUTO then all your doing is FORCING it to convert to RGB which means your losing detail in the conversion process. Setting it to display FULL RGB will clip blacks and whites on a display that cant handle full RGB as well as change the colouring (Everything is changed).
Setting to full rgb wont actually change blurays or dvds if the settings is still AUTO as it ouputs YCBCR anyways (as it should do)
Full rgb only effects games and anything running through the XMB

Interesting that your yet ANOTHER person whos found that not all HDMI cables are the same like people claim (Digital is digital blah blah)

If you want a half decent hdmi cable then head to EBAY and buy a good 1.3 compliant one (The shorter the better)

i tried the calibration settings for my tv and i didnt like it. the picture was extremely dark. it lost alot more than it gained from those settings.

Then the tv clearly wasnt calibrated. Im assuming you ment the ones I posted?
If they didnt work then either they were the wrong settings or somethings not set correctly on your tv or equipment
TRUE calibrated tvs cant look any better.
Contrast set too high will CLIP whites. Too low and you reduce colour
Brightness too high will make blacks look grey. Too low and black detail will be lost
    etc etc

Do you not have a THX disc to set up from?

If not then download this ~
    http://www.homecinema-fr.com/colorimetre/release/DVD_V2.0.0.ISO
And burn the image to a dvd. Put that in your dvd player to set the tvs contrast and brightness
Then you have something to work off then

wouldnt it be fair to assume that my tv can handle full rgb if in the instructions it says the hdmi signal needs to be full rgb for me to be able to adjust the hdmi black level setting.

Id say so yes (Although im still unsure what the 'black level settings' does exactly so its not gospel)
A tv that CAN produce a full signal should do so automatically
If you DO need to change the setting to get full rgb then its going to be a bit of a nightmare as blurays and dvds dont work in full mode. You could force it to convert to full rgb but then blurays and dvds will never look as good as they can as youll lose detail in the conversion process

yes i set everything as advised and it was far too dark.
we do have thx on star wars dvds. i never really got any joy with them. anyway a thx disc shouldnt be necessary as i was given all the settings i needed in those calibration settings and as i said it looked far too dark afterwards.
