ps3 wont let me set display to 1080p

i just got a ps3 today and when i went to display settings were you tick all settings your tv is capable of it refuses the 1080p setting. after i have ticked all the settings and press x or press to go right to finish it just takes me straight back to that page. i have to untick 1080p for it to work and get past that page but then it is only set to 1080i.
now before you think i have made one of the two obvious errors i havent. the tv is a 1080p tv and the console is connected to the tv with a hdmi cable.
i half suspect what may be responsible for this. as the net is upstairs the first thing i connected it to was a tv that can only go upto 1080i. so that was what was selected in the initial setup. could that be the cause? is there a way to go into the initial setup settings to undo this. or could that not be causing my problem anyway?
i want to be able to play games and watch blu rays in 1080p, so i will be very annoyed if i cant because of some fault with the console.
i did update the console to version 2.7 when it was connected to the net so the firmware is upto date.

Are you SURE its a full 1080P tv and not just 1080P 24fps 'compatible' (As the PS3 doesnt display in 24fps unless playing a properly encoded bluray)
Put a bluray disc in. Im pretty sure it plays in 1080P 24fps in default settings:idea:0 -

whats the difference between a full 1080p tv and a 1080p compatable tv? it sounds like the same thing to me. its a samsung le40a686.
while scrolling through i did think i saw a setting for blu ray saying 1080p.
my xbox 360 sets to 1080p no problem.
a small side issue i need to ask is how do i get the disc menu on for the dark knight? when the disc is inserted the film starts straight away. i have pressed every button on the controller and none of the buttons take me to the disc menu. you may say who cares about that but how else will i access the discs sound setting menu or the extras?0 -
erm.....SQUARE button brings up the menu i think
(Possibly the triangle ~ I cant remember now)
when you goto DISPLAY and MANUALLY select 1080P and click to continue a screen comes up telling you that if you can see the screen ok then click ok to continue. I assume you CAN see the screen yes?
Assuming you did then you did SAVE the settings yes?:idea:0 -
that doesnt happen. when i manually select 1080p the screen goes off for a while and then comes back on at the page were the different resolutions can be ticked. the first time i selected 1080p the picture went off and i had to hold the on/off button and wait for two beeps to get it back.
should i try a different hdmi slot? i'm just speculating here. it is currently connected to hdmi 4. its the one at the side rather than at the back like the rest are.
i fear that the answer maybe a reset. i hope not after having put all my details in and signing up to psn.0 -
By all means try a different hdmi slot (Though it shouldnt make a difference ~ unless number 4 hdmi is limited to 1080i?):idea:0

If the screen goes blank that points to your tv not being able to accept a true 1080p signal (Youve not switched on FULL rgb have you? It should be 'limited'):idea:0

Same DISPLAY setup page. Theres one for settings up the screen resolution (Which youve used). Underneath that theres RGB FULL or LIMITED (Should be limited)
And SUPERWHITE ON or OFF (Should be off):idea:0 -
thanks i will try that later. my dads currently playing killzone 2. it looks hard.
can i set up more than one username so that my dad doesnt play on my saved games and i dont play on his?0
