Pick up only item - paypal or cash on collection?

Nothing at all unless you can trace down a valid address for the 'buyer' and serve small claims papers on him.
Sorry to sound harsh, but what did you expect would happen in the event of a chargeback when paypal asked you to give the online tracking to prove delivery?
He parked in a Sainsbury's carpark when he came to meet me - do you think it would be worth contacting Sainsburys for CCTV images to try and get the numberplate?0 -

You could get the guy to sign his passport, provide a blood sample and present himself at the paypal office - still does not meet the requirements for seller protection.
All that the numberplate may help with is if you wanted to bring a civil case against him, but as you did not adhere to the paypal rules, they will not be interested.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

There is a piece of furniture I am thinking of bidding on and the seller is asking for immediate payment by Paypal or a bankers draft and to be collected between certain dates. I am expecting it to go for a fair bit of money, something like £850.
Being the buyer what is my best and safest option and also I want the seller to be comfortable and safe as well?0 -
I have just spoken to Paypal. They're holding my money from the sale because the buyer apparantly says payment was unauthorised (no mention of not receiving the goods). Does anyone know if i'll be covered by Paypal if an account has been hacked into and has been used to pay for goods??0

Did you post the item to a confirmed address using an online track and trace service?
If not - then it's a simple payment reversal - the unaithorised card gets the funds placed back, and your paypal account goes into negative if you have already withdrawn or spent the funds.
Mark the item as unpaid in your eBay summary, and start an unpaid item dispute with the "buyer" to at least get your fees back.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
Unfortnately I didn't post the item - i met the guy to deliver it. Does delivery matter in this instance if the dispute is because of an authorised transaction - they haven't said they didn't receive the item....0

Proof of delivery is paramount in all cases - either disputed payments or item not received claims.
If you had proof of delivery to a confirmed address, then Paypal would fight your corner - and I speak from experience on this.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
