Glasgow Bus Fares

When i was driving for firstbus in Glasgow 5 or 6 years ago I was selling adult all day tickets for £1.80 if i recall correctly.
Up until quite recently i drove for Stagecoach in Ayrshire and to get from Kilmarock to Ayr (about 10 miles) or Kilmarnock to Cumnock (13 miles) you wont get much change from a fiver for a RETURN ticket, not an all day job. Same goes for weekly tickets £20-£25 to cover the above journeys. Compare a stagecoach return ticket to a journey from East Kilbride to Glasgow with Firstbus which is roughly 12 or 13 miles and it becomes obvious that there are bigger thieves out there than Firstbus.
I am appaled that Stagecoach charge as much as they do and the people of Ayrshire have no choice but to pay these ridiculous fares as Stagecoach really do run the show here, no competition whatsoever.
That said though, The amount of people that I let on for free or cheap just because they were regulars should make a small dent in the companys profits! :shhh:0 -

My point entirely... Don't think most Glaswegians realise how lucky they are!0 -
Was about to post a Help please query, but this Thread may have posters who will...........
I'm 60[how come?]and spending next week/ten days in Glasgow for last year's postponed cheapie YHA break.
An all-up week's tkt would be best but I'd like to know about wider jaunts[inc. Edinburgh?]and will want to nip over to friend on Bute, may also see beanielou of these hallowed Halls.
I want to visit auctions, charity shops, Galleries in no particular order - carboots if accessible by public transport.
Hints and warnings will be hugely appreciated - thankyou all.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

For edinburgh you are best booking through citylinks website as they have £1 fars each way.Only prob is that you have to book the exact times you are tavelling. There is other posts on the scotland site about this.
Dont know many auctions and the best car boot thats easily accessable is the big one at the glasgow fruit market on sundays. You can get a number 19 bus up to royston road and walk down to it.You get the 19 from hope street .
If you go on to first buses web site you can get details of how to get places and what buses go, they also have a journey planner.
Might be worth a visit to the barras on sunday- although I havent been for years.
As for charity shops there are several along the top part of sauchiehall street, which are very central and well supplied.
However maybe best if you atrated a new thread for a better response .0 -

that's true enough. A Stagecoach return from Glasgow to Ayr is only a few pence cheaper than a train ticket, which is a real rip off. Before the firstcard type tickets came around I had to get a ZoneCard and it was probably a lot dearer than £44 10 years ago! Thanks for putting at least one of my rising bills into perspective0 -
Brian the Lion, you've taken the point out of context entirely. I'd like to clear up the point that I made.
The point I was making was that First Glasgow have risen their fares well above inflation twice in the last year. I didn't make any comparison to trains or other bus companies, other than Edinburgh and London.
I agree that First are cheaper than some other bus companies, Stagecoach included, however, the point that was being made is simply the high amounts they increase their fares when they review them. It may be good value now, but at this rate it won't in a couple of years time.0 -

I agree with what your saying about inflation and apologise if we've gotten into a bit of a slanging match, lol...
Ive never understood First pricing structure at all.. since the fares went up the other week people in the Bridge of weir have to pay £5 for a day ticket.. WHY? it makes no sense0 -
No problem. I get your point about them still being the cheapest option in the area, it's just that their fare increases seem to be so high thesedays that it's likely the train will be cheaper soon! lol0

Well, I'm back and Glasgow hit the spot in so many ways, I'm returning, in September, prob.
I considered the Tour Bus, 2-day tkt validity(with £1 off chit from the best Hostel I've ever stayed at. plus ancient crone discount of £2)v.g. for cruising endlessly, on and off, to fix mind map of place. Then took weekly tkt on First @£14.50 for going as far as Loch Lomond and hammering generally for making most of it. All in all excellent value.
Found Paddy's Market(sadly, about to be closed 15/5)and met up with Glasgow Art Fair on day when the City Chambers tours were cancelled because of the meeting that finally decided to close 22 primary schools[mmm, was probably a rubber stamp jobby, the more I read and heard]. There'd been a protest presence from the morning I arrived and eventually a strong, but sympathetic, police presence which increased considerably on decision day. Yes, plenty of human sadness on the streets, but almost universal expansive goodwill, smiles, genuine kindness and generosity of spirit.
I loved walking about, looking upwards at building skylines - a handsome city - and did indeed find Blochairn on Sunday morning.
This is not meant to be an 'I did, I did...'postcardy post - just a way of thanking all of you who helped me en route to a place I'm returning to with pleasure.
To start each day walking down through Kelvingrove alive with tulips, blossom and appreciative people, then coming out on the corner of La Belle Place, is - for this francophile - a felicitous start to any day.
Thankyou Glasgow..........

p.s. Did go to the Barras, but was way too early on Saturday and Sunday was already marked for Blochairn. Next time.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

I live in Glasgow and I love this city. We have so much to offer, especially for free or not much money. Sadly though a lot of people who live in Glasgow do not appreciate what is on their doorstep.0
