Testing suspended again during the Suez Crisis. Learners allowed to drive unaccompanied and examiners help to administer petrol rations.
Testing is resumed on 15 April 1957 and has continued uninterrupted ever since.

(not a lot of people knew that :))

I think I must have had about 100. My parents pressured me into having lessons and I didn't really care about driving so I just carried on having lessons and not really putting any effort into it.

When I got a job and actually needed to drive I had about 8 lessons before I passed my test. Probably could have done it in less but the instructor didn't seem keen on the cutting £20/week from his income so quickly.

Just remember that you won't be asked to do anything on your test that you wouldn't do on a driving lesson. Not sure how long the practical test is now (I did mine in 1986), but it used to be 20 minutes, so its very quick. I'd also say that there willl come a point on the test that you'll think you've made a mistake and then be absolutely sure you've failed. After that, you'll just get on with it (This happened to me, and everyone else I know, and I passed first time anyway). Just try and relax (I know, easier said than done!), take your time and the very best of luck!!!!

I took my test before the theory test stuff came in - I had 6 x 1 hour lessons and passed first time - but, I had already passed my motorbike test and drove a Reliant Robin for about a year, legally, on my own, so I had some idea of what I was doing re gears and road positioning etc.

Not bad for a 30 year old girl ;)

20 lessons on and off, and passed first time, and then I paid my instructor for a 2 hour motorway lesson which should be compulsory imo.

I must say - once you're with an instructor you're comfortable with, you have a much better chance of raising your confidence levels.
Also, take a look around a think "all these other drivers passed their tests (well, we hope) so I can do it too"
I think I confessed I was feeling nervous when I got in the car for my test and the instructor said some kind words and made me laugh - that helped!

Good Luck and let us know how you get on

Had 10 lessons including the pre-test hour before my first test, plus a fair few hours driving with my Dad - failed first test. I forgot I wasn't in my Dad's far more powerful car....!

I booked three tests over the next few months and they were all cancelled because of bad weather, and finally I got another test in spring of that year, I had one lesson before it and passed.

My Dad never took a test either - he statrted to drive before licences were made compulsory. Nevertheless he was still a very good driver.

I only had 10 hours worth of lessons with my instructor but I also had my own car which I always used to drive with my mum. I would drive myself to college with her in the passenger seat then she would drive the car home etc.... Going to the shop for bread my mum would make me drive etc...

God luck with your test. If you get worked up it wont help. At the end of the day whats going to happen will happen. Just concentrate and hope for the best :)
