I used to spend £70 every 3 months on getting my hair done!! Now I spend £30.

Magazines from time to time and expensive food shopping. I used to think that I could afford it and deserved nice food. This is, until I added it up for a month - £100 ! ouch.

Buying lots of nice clothes and shoes, just because I fancied them. Now I dont go to the shops for entertainment.

Buying new clothes every week. Now the last thing I bought was about a month ago and was a pair of shoes for £12 in sale. (Got the £12 from returning a book someone bought me for Christmas - shh!).

Going into boots for a sandwich and coming out with loads of crap that I didn't need. Now don't go into Boots at all, not even for sandwiches. I love Boots too much. :o

Spending loads of money on boyfriend's xmas/birthday/valentines presents. Past valentine's day bought nothing, not even a card. Although perhaps that's taking moneysaving too far?!
What did I do at work before I discovered MSE?!

DFD - WAS: a while ago

NOW - not sure, due to boyfriend going back to uni for masters and now pgce. Worth it in the long run!
Proud to be dealing with my debts!

It is very interesting to see everyone's list of what they used to spend money on. I have been reading them and seeing things I used to spend money on in most of them!

I have not been a money saver very long but, this week, because of my £10 spending money, I really have had to cut down. I noticed it mostly on the following:

    1. Starbucks/Costa cappuccinos on the way to and from work. Amazing amount of money every week

    2. Magazines and newspapers every week that either hardly got read or can read online for free

    3. Lots of food, 'in case we had people over', that got chucked every week

    4. Used to get fruit from Sainsburys to eat at work while the greengrocer around the corner sells everything so much cheaper!

    5. Lots of crips/drinks while commuting. No surprise the purse was always empty and the waistline expanding :o

That's just a few things I noticed this week. I won't even go into the beauty treatments, beauty products, clothes that look nice but never actually get worn!

Good post SS, made me think of all sorts of things!

Magazines haven't bought one for ages now, I still love them too

clothes, the latest thing, not that I was very extravagant but now I adapt things I've got or just buy an 'in' accessorie.

Shopping at only Tesco's and buying 'Supposedly 'finest' food. Now I pick and choose from Lidl and other places and often get better for less.

Cosmetics that were advertised as 'must have, fantastic and all that rubbishy hype'
Still spend far too much on the dreaded weed!!
Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

    Good thread.

Mine are similar to a lot of the other girlies:

    * Magazines. Used to buy Heat every week, plus B, New Woman, Glamour & Company most months. And they were SO full of ads & stories I didn't even bother reading. And just made me want to buy...

    * Lots of shoes, clothes, handbags & accessories. Can't believe now how much I used to spend on clothes. Shameful. And all in fairly expensive shops like Oasis, Warehouse, Office etc too. Have enough clothes to last me a while as are all quite classic style anyway rather than high fashion which wuld date, but will look forward to buying one or two nice items in the summer once my overdraft is cleared.

    * Lunch out everyday whilst at work. When I actually added up how much all those pre-packed sandwiches & Starbuck's were costing me a month it out me off ever wanting them again. Now bring my own lunch to work religiously & feel so much fuller after lunch & much healthier.

    * Cosmetics & expensive beauty products. What a waste of money!

I have learned so much in the last couple of months. Realised I don't need a "treat" every few days. And don't feel at all deprived. Just on a high from not frittering away cash.

Lunches at work. At a fiver a day ish, its not cheap. LUckily io moved to a worse office ( far from the shops) and cant really be bothered to go out at lunchtime ( saving per week, about 20 quid!)

Diet Coke. I was going through a 2litre per day, plus assorted cans etc. About £4 per day!! NO NEED!! So Ive got my bottle of cordial and one diet coke every few days, I havent noticed it!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

    QUOTE]

I with everyone on everything, but I do confess to spending £30 on a haircut every six weeks and I won't change this. My hair is awful unless it gets cut by a professional.

Oh, and yes I am male.

Books. Not that many, but every holiday or work trip overseas I'd buy 3 for 2 and think I was saving money...... then, especially if somewhere with nice shopping, would leave the books behind to give more room in case, even if I hadn't read them.....

Now I buy for 80p max from charity shop & give back when I return. Use the library the rest of the time but don't want to get sand in them.

Suppose I should try to sell them on ebay but seems bit immoral.......
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
