Don't worry: gammon is ham so go along with any recipe you find suitable although there's not enough time to soak dried peas and make a start on it today.

Thankyou, do the peas have to be soaked?

The peas really do need to be soaked or they'll take forever to cook. This thread has lots of advice that should help:

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the replies together.

you could use green or yellow split peas, they don't need soaking

I'm probably in a minority, but I never use marrowfats for pea & ham soup, always split peas, preferably green, it's possibly a Scots thing?

dried marrowfats are best, don't think the canned ones would be very nice unless you needed soup in a huge hurry

do love marrowfats in my Scotch Broth though :)

  • Hi,

the bags of Morrisons frozen mushy peas (£1) make a good soup as well, oh, and you could throw in a smoked hough. tongue0018.gif
