Pea and ham soup

Ok, the shank is cooking in boiling water in my slow cooker. My main question is this. After soaking the peas, do I have to boil them up before adding them to the stock tomorrow?0
-
No, add them and they will boil up in the stock and take on moor flavour to boot!
The tablet. In my previous life i soaked peas overnight with a tablet to make mushy peas for the restaurant. are you sure you are not making mushy?Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!0 -
Hi Savvy Spender. Thanks for that. No they are deffo not mushy peas. Maybe you could make them into mushy peas but there are just standard "Bigga" dried peas. I'm just nipping out now to get onion and leek for the soup!0

I would add a few diced carrots as well.;) And a vegetable stock cube.
Felines are my favourite

Thanks for the info PW,I found a ham shank in my freezer sort out yesterday and am going to cook it myself overnight this week. I have lentils and mixed veg soup mix in the cupboard to use up as well and onions and some chopped leeks that I froze before I went on holiday so I am going to cook the shank first then cook the soup.I shall have a good 3.5 litres hopefully to go into my freezer for winter days.I have also quite a few of the Lakeland soup bags which I find are brilliant as they don't take up as much space in the freezer as screw-topped pots do.I have never used the tablet with peas soup as it always reminded me of a dishwasher tablet .It hasn't made much differance I think to the pea soup I have made in the past as I am still alive and kicking

Hey, soup was lovely. I think the flavour got a bit drowned by using the larger slow cooker, but I added a few ham stock cubes and it was lush. ALso, in future, I don;t think I will use the tablet. The peas ended up really mushed/falling apart. Not a big deal really though. I chucked in a handfull of pearl barley a few hours befoe the end which give it some more bite!
Yummy, cheap, and healthy! Thanks!0 -
Mum sent me home with a smoked gammon joint, so i have it in the SC with some mixed soup veg, lentils and yellow split peas (350g total), 2 onions, some curry leaves (couldn't find bay leaves!) and some black pepper. Hope it's nice! Will report back - first time making this kindA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Right, i have a ham hock in the sc making stock for pea and ham soup
I've read this whole thread and can't find an answer. I've bought split green peas - are they ok or is pea and ham soup to be made with mushy peas? I've never had pea and ham soup so i don't know..... i'm guessing it doesn't matter but just wanted to check.
Re above, my last soup was scrummy !A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi all,
I cooked a gammon joint in my sc cooker yesterday and have loads left, hubby would love me to make Pea and ham soup with it but not sure it would work?? Anyone have any recipes and tips to make it with a left over joint. Doesn't have to be in the slow cooker can do it on hob. Have found a few recipes on here but the all say use ham. Thanks0 -
Don't worry: gammon is ham so go along with any recipe you find suitable although there's not enough time to soak dried peas and make a start on it today.0
