If the Tory policy states - and it does - that they would raise fuel duty when oil is cheap, then that would mean rate increases now when oil is cheap. Are they objecting to the increase? Have they been on the media saying its an outrage? No - because its their policy too.

And yes, screw the rules. What rules are we screwing and who set them, and who polices them? Does the government need to raise cash or not? Does the opposition oppose the measure or not?

Like I said, its not a party political issue. The Tories understand fully well the need to raise cash and know that fuel duty is a good way of doing so - fitting nicely with their guff about being green for added good measure.

Why are you totally avoiding the point about them doing this before the budget and sneaking it through?

From what I can remember they always put the petrol up before a budget so that when the lovely Mr Brown puts petrol prices up, it looks good that the petrol stations don't do it because they have technically got the pumps at these prices anyway. And not everyone has the common sense to work out that the garages are still doing what Mr Brown says, instead people say "oooh my petrol station is defying the rise"..does this make sense, sorry if I'm rambling..couldn't think of an easier way of putting it.

Yes its so sneaky that all the news bulletins and press are talking about it.

And wasn't this deferred from the last budget? The way you're talking its like it was announced to noone and its not being talked about.

"But the government has been defending the tax rise. A Treasury spokesperson said: "Oil prices are far lower now compared to the peaks seen last year, and we have seen significant reductions in the price of fuel at the pumps over recent months." - BBC Article

"The cartel (OPEC) will meet again on 28 May to assess whether further cuts in production are necessary." - BBC Article

Give it a couple of months, OPEC are waiting to see if they are able to enforce the last round of oil production cuts they made/wanted.

Price goes up, government gets to blame world oil prices.
