    Just contrast http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/oct/17/economy-gordonbrown
Gordon Brown launches attack on 'scandalous' Opec
PM outraged that oil cartel is thinking of cutting production in response to falling prices

and the the headline of this thread (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5g-fhdlWbRFwj1cD7oRo-etudNQow

Seems like its ok for Crash to increase taxes but not for OPEC to cut supplies. There is absolutely no consistency in this man's message at all

All this after Gordon said there would be no price rise on fuel for one year. Looks like he broke his own promise. I am pretty sure it was less than a year ago he said this, unless someone can prove me wrong.

I made this mistake. What he said was he would not put it up "this year".

What he meant by that was the governments financial year which starts 1st April.

So he's putting it up the second he's out of the "year" he quoted. But he already broke his promise by putting duty up in December to combat the VAT decrease.

So 2 fuel duty rises in 5 months. When the VAT goes back up, that fuel duty will not be taken off again.

    Lot of spin, really.

This rise has broken the usual rules too, they normally are required to put these things in the budget to let us know, but they have got around this by doing something or other. Remember seeing it in a newspaper article.

This way you will get "fuel duty has been kept unchanged" instead of putting a rise into the budget.

well both my bike and car have been filled to the brim before the rise.....not that I spend more than 60 quid a month on fuel anyway.....but a penny saved and all that.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

So that's an additional £1 to fill a 50 litre tank. So when VAT is raised again, more than likely above the old 17.5% rate. Thats another 3p a tank in tax.

Only pence but its all going to add. For those of us that have no choice but to use our cars to commute to work.....

Oh well, I'm certainly looking forward to that. Didn't realise it was going up. Don't we usually have the Chancellor's "Budget" in March - did I miss it this year?

Off topic, but I just have to tell somebody. I popped into in Somerfield today and the price of a tin of Napolina plum tomatoes was.... £1.15!!! I thought it must've been for a pack of four - but no, it was for one bl00dy can!! Sorry, just had to get that out of my system - I feel much better now.

!!!!!!. The petrol increase is quite important. A bit more tax here and there - watch the VAT cut, morons, while Gordon juggles behind your back. Affects everybody who drives or orders produce that has been driven. Increases inflationery pressures. Does not help business, hauliers, etc.

Nice one Gordon. What are you doing for us tomorrow?

There are two petrol stations near me. One of them has had unleaded at 105.9p for at least a week (I've only just started driving that way again since last week). The other one has been 90.9p/litre for pretty much most of Feb/Mar.

The 106p one must be some little p!sspot place to charge that much when the next closest is 15p cheaper.

Well businesses, particularly hauliers were hit when Darling cut VAT, because he put duty up to compensate. But for business it meant that there was less VAT to reclaim, and they cant reclaim excise duty
