I have a feeling it might not work in train station ticket machines and pay@pump petrol stations but when I get a chance to test these things out I will let you know :)

I was wondering this. I have been unable to use the Co-op Electron card or the Paypal Top-up card at my local rail station. The rail company said they don't accept Electron but the Paypal Top-up card is meant to be accepted everywhere that Visa. Not the case!

I've yet to try my Connect card at the station. My gut feeling is that the train company probably allows transactions up to a certain limit so it may work for smaller tickets. I suspect for higher amounts they will go for authorisation at higher amounts. Barclays may allow smaller transactions anyway. Guess time will tell.

Good luck with the BR tomorrow matey.

As long as there are funds in the account at the point of auth then the card and bank will allow the transaction, those funds will then be allocated to that purchase.

The card can be used anywhere where Visa Debit/Delta is accepted. Online if there is no option for those types of cards I have found that you can simply select Visa and this seems to work (will need to try this though).

I had a Visa Debit card on my A&L account and this did auth on every transaction but never ran into any problems.

Barclays also subscribe to Verified by Visa so you can use the card securely online.

Thanks mate, just got back from court where they checked over my forms and I paid the (£510, boo) fee. Swore an oath and am back to see the judge at 2pm tomorrow.

I'll write another thread because something quite funy just happened :)

Not all terminals will go for authorisation, in which case it'll be up to the floor limit set by the retailer or the limit allowed without authorisation as set by Barclays. I think most terminals do authorise all transactions nowadays but some don't, particularly places like railway stations. I don't anticipate many problems with the Connect card though because I think even if authorisation is not available, the floor limit set by the retailer or Barclays will allow the transaction to go through. The requirement for Electron cards is that they must authorise, hence it not being as widely accepted as Visa Debit cards.

I went BR in Dec'08 and got a Barclays cashcard account. In Jan they upgraded my cash card to a Connect card and also registered me for online banking which I started using in February. Despite using the PinSentry thingy, it stopped working recently and I have just been into a branch to find out that I am no longer allowed Barclays Internet Banking due to being BR. Stupid thing is they gave me it when I was already BR and had stated the fact, but I guess it has now filtered through all of their computer systems and they took it away without even a letter. I get to keep my Connect card though, so it isn't all bad.

EPIC FAIL Barclays, even though I only used it for checking DDs and balance, it was useful...time to consider moving to a Co-op account.

In reference to the above, I bought a rail ticket at my local station with no problems. It authorised very quickly which would indicate that it did not go for authorisation. Previously I was unable to use Co-op Electron card or my Paypal Top-up card at the station.

I would think that they must get authorization on all transaction or it could make you OD at the bank and if this was a possibility then we wouldn't have been given the account, I hope all transactions have to get authorization cos the last thing that I want is to go OD,also my prepaid card is mastercard so that must get athorization first as its prepaid?
