Anyone familiar with the Nokia 2630?

This is driving me mad. Got the Nokia 2630 and am having issues with the backlight or lack of it. About 15 seconds after I've last used the phone the display screen light goes off and it's so dark that I can't see anything on it. The only way to see if there's a text, missed call or whatever is to actually pick the phone up and press one of the keys. I can't understand this. Is my phone faulty or are all 2630's like this? Seems stupid to me that you cant just look at your phone to see if there's been any calls.

If this is an issue specific to the 2630 can anyone recommend a good value phone that keeps the display lit up instead ?

Many newer phones do this to save battery life.

Right. Makes sense but it's a pain to have to keep pressing a button every time you've left your phone in another room on silent for a few minutes .I want to just be able to look at it as I walk past it, and see if there's been any calls or TM's ! The phone does have something called 'sleep mode' which I've turned off but it's made no difference.

I've got a Nokia (different model) and this annoyed the hell out me at first. I found out there is no way to change it. You do get used to it though

Does the phone not switch to a time bar screensaver after a while where it'll show icons for new texts, missed calls, etc?

No. I had another Nokia that did that, the 3120- dimmed the screen but had a moving bar. This one doesn't seem to do that.
It's not too bad if I keep it in a fairly well lit room, I can squint hard and just about see the display, but in a very sunny place or a darker place it's a pain ...
Sometimes I prefer my ancient 3310 - nice clear screen,no bells or whistles.

I have this phone, as others have said above i think its just a power saving thing with the phone. Lucky enough for me it doesnt bother me this much as i can see if i have a miss call for a few mins but then also i dont mind pressing the button to see it.

Sorry as this wasnt alot of help, but i dont see anyway to change it
