The OP did say she saw it and that it was tiny.
Rats can be small but I've never seen a tiny one.

Yep, seen it twice. The first time I didn't even know it was here, the second time I saw it when I was checking the curtains for more damage and it shot out. Tiny, and light in colour.0

Green & Blacks Organic Dark Chocolate worked for mine, nice way to go too.0

CAUGHT IT! :T
Went to bed last night having laid 4 new traps bound with thread and Mars Bar, and one of these http://www.diy.com/nav/garden/garden-care-watering/pest-weed-control/animal_control/-specificproducttype-rat___mouse_control/The-Big-Cheese-Multi-Catch-Mouse-Small-10777802.
Heard the scratching right away so I knew it was on the loose. Got up this morning and checked the 4 traps. Nothing. Remembered the new one and voila! There it was!
I've washed it out and i'll put it down again tonight, the other 4 are still there too. If nothing else in about a week i'll assume the coast is clear. And then i'll get one of those radar things to try and deter any future squatters.

I'm currently at war with what must be super-intelligent rats.
A house on the road behind us has had massive problems with rats, due (I think) to lots of decking in their garden - apparently they've got into their sewers and chewed all the pipes etc.
Anyway, the other day I saw a rat in our shed. There's nothing in there for them to eat so I guess they are just using it for shelter from the rain. Got one of those Little Nipper rat traps expecting that to be the end of the problem butit's been useless. I don't think that it's not sensitive enough (the only thing it has caught, ironically, was a mouse), but the rats somehow either manage to eat the bait (white chocolate and peanut butter), or, since I started melting the chocolate onto the bait plate, set off the trap and then scoff the bait afterwards.
I have no clue how they are doing it but I assume they must be the Einsteins of the rat world. So I've invested in a live catch trap which should be here tomorrow - hopefully having to go into the trap to get the bait will finally stop them seeing the trap as a convenient source of yummy food.
AAAARGH at being outsmarted by a rat to date, though!0 -

I caught two baby rats with a live trap but the adults are clearly too clever to go in there. So I got a 1kg tub of Big Cheese Rat Poison as a last resort.
Well, they've wolfed down the entire tub and still seem happy as anything. They certainly love the rat poison - I even saw them out searching for a few bits I'd dropped on the ground. I'm at my wits end - just tried baiting the live trap with some of their favourite poison as they seem to much prefer it to white chocolate and peanut butter which is what I was using before.
My next stage will be to call the council but I suspect they will just lay down more poison. The stuff I'm using at the moment is meant to be a super-warafin so I have my doubts that it will do any good.0 -
while its summer i'm thinking about winter and I usually get mice and sometimes rats in the garden.
I've holes in my floor by radiator pipes in kitchen and lounge to prove it!:( hardboard floors so they are gettin in underneath.
I have a gravel gully between house and patio so I plan to dig this our and pour concrete to try to stop the mice getting under the floor.
what other precautions can I take?0
