We had two cats and mice. The cats were less than useless.

If you want to discourage mice, don't tempt them by leaving food in cupboards for them!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Can't imagine mine being much impressed with being expected to catch a mouse - the idea of her earning her board and lodgings... nah!

    Thanks for your helpful advice!

Sorry I was under the impression that everyone kept food in their kitchen cupboards! Silly me!

I wasn't trying to encourage them, just wanted proof that it was a rodent and not that husband had just knocked the banana whilst in his work bag and made it go squidgy at the end.

But you said you left it in a bag under the stairs-just where the mice can easily get to it from where they are coming into the house.

Husband has left his bag in that cubby hole with his daily fruit in for 11 years, never had it nibbled before so didn't even give it a thought!

Had I known that I had visitors I wouldn't have put it in there, DOH!!!!
to quote myself I said I wasn't trying to encourage them!

Relax, it's only a mouse. Half the houses in the UK probably have them.
