Living in a rural area, and having neighbours that leave food out for the birds all day every day, we have a nice problem of rats and mice around our property... We also have a nice big jar of Neosorexia - potent stuff and you certainly won't want to eat it yourself, but it'll rid you of your problem without a smell as it dries the creature out from the inside and turns them to dust!

For those recommending humane traps, mice and rats will be able to return to where they are trapped from a long distance so you won't really be getting rid of the problem!

Depends where you release them! If you drive to the nearest forest or woods and let them go then i doubt they'll be bothered to walk all the way back to the house! Don't stick them out in your own garden though or alas they probably will just find their way back into the house :/

We had plastic bags shredded...it was bats and birds getting in wee holes.
You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
    You just keep on walking

I have a flat roof above my kitchen extension, and i think squirrels have got in, i can hear them above me, and i always have loads in the garden and on the roof..

Does anyone know how i can get rid of them? Do they cause a lot of damage? Thank you in advance for any replies..

Op sorry for hijacking your thread....
  • The best trap I have found is called a rat zapper and is very effective against mice. It is electronic and shocks the rodent first then kills it outright, it is supposed to be much more humane than a snap trap, and the best thing is it is armed 24/7 all year round. Just put a dry peanut in as bait and leave it to do its job. I think they now have a newer model out, but from experience it is very effective, and not messy at all! Great if you live in the country like me......

I dont think putting the cats up there is a bad idea at all.

unless it turns out to be massive cat eating killer rats.

As you've already been told it could be bats, you can't legally do anything now. They are heavily protected by law, and once it's been suggested that there is a possibility that there are bats, you have to treat it as if there are bats until you know for certain that there aren't.

It is more likely to be mice, but you need to be careful now, just in case it isn't (incidentally lots of bats settle in highly urban areas, pipistrelles, for example, love to roost in PVC soffits, though not in loft spaces).

The Bat Conservation Trust take it incredibly seriously, and people do get prosecuted for disturbing bats. Maximum punishment is £5,000 per bat, and up to 6 months in jail.

If you put bait or a cat or anything else up there when a roost is suspected, you are already breaking the law. If it turns out the suspected roost is an actual roost you could be in serious trouble.
