Well, I always thought it was an urban myth. But, it happened.
I was woken up in the wee hours the other morning by a splashing noise in my bathroom. I live alone, so went to investigate. I turned the light on and caught sight of the blighter trying to climb out of the toilet bowl, in a flash, it disappeared down the U bend, so I presume that's where it came from.
It took me about 4 hours to pluck up the courage/desperation to actually sit on the throne!
I'm in a ground floor flat, so it's probably not that difficult for them to get up the waste pipes. Just why now it has become a problem, i don't know.
There was evidence of a return visit this morning, a couple of droppings in the bottom of the pan.
The rat-man is getting a call this morning!
(Toilet lid now stays firmly shut with a big tug of aqueous cream on top to weigh it down. I just hope they don't come en-mass and force their way in.....)0 -
This happened a few years ago with my in laws, in an upstairs loo.Huby had to go and get rid of it, in laws were scared stiff.Fortunately, they had a downstairs loo that they could use.0

Does putting bleach in the toilet bowl deter them?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I keep my bog and sinks pretty clean (cleaned and bleached once a week) and after the sighting I used alot of bleach and did alot of flushing and yet there was evidence of a visit this morning.
So, they must appreciate a sparkling lav as much as I.0 -
Cant add anything other than to say I didnt think that happened either.
Thanks for posting it as now I am never sitting on my toilet again:)0 -
Rats can climb up sewer pipes into the loo on ground and basements loos as the inclines is often shallow they don’t often do it though? There are usually much easier and quicker ways for rats to enter property or find food etc if you’re worried you can Put bleach down there close loo seat after use and flush before lifting seat or using change the toilet design to one with steps side get something like this

So you can see whats in there first more for peace of mind than any real solution
As a real solution though
You can also get Baffles, rat-blockers stoppers verity of names for them for drainpipes some need a plumber to fit some just push in place can cause other problems with blockages etc cheaper ones out there but shows you how to install them

Or as always ebay

Basically back flow protection0 -
My Mum lifted the lid one day and found a frog looking up at her!
My Dad rescued it and released it in the garden.
For the rat, I'd leave bleach in the loo overnight so that the water would taste nasty for it and make it go elsewhere (until you can get the rat catcher to investigate).0 -
I often used to find fish in ours, but we did live on a boat at the time. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

My Gramps used to go round the garden first thing every morning and collect up any slugs that were feasting on his prized blooms. He'd wrap them in loo roll and flush them down the toilet.
Gran would be livid, because most days at least one would find its way back again and be sat under the seat....
But your RAT takes some beating OP!! Not sure I'd ever be able to use the loo again..0
