Thanks for the advice RAS, will certainly leave it outdoors until I can plant it. As for not letting much of the fruit develop this year, don't know if I will have the will power, but if it will allow it to develop better then I think I will follow your words. :beer:0

Can someone give me a step-by-step guide to growing potatoes in the pop-up bags please! I am a complete novice! Do I fill the bags almost to the brim with compost and what sort of seed potatoes should I get at this time of the year, earlies, seconds or maincrop? Any help appreciated! Thanks."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

hi
you would be best posting on this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=353824
If you have a pack of poundland (my branch had Golden Wonder) and three pop-up bags, add 6-8 inches of compost at the bottom , plant the tats and cover with 4 inches of soil to start them off.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks RAS will follow your advice, i get sort of brain dead when it starts to get technical, as on the other thread! I have no problem with growing flowers from seed, bulb, tuber etc. but for some reason I have problems with veg! All this talk of chitting etc has me featherlegged! Thanks for your advice."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

Loving the Poundland action! I got one of the pop up bags to try the potato growing, 6 solar lights for a pound each and them I got carried away in the home section ( I move house on Wednesday) Will go back for the seed potatoes though! All efforts are focused on paying off my credit card - was £5k Sept 08 - NOW £800! This will definately be gone by end of May 09. Then save save save save save save and a bit more saving!0

I got red onions and white onion bags from poundland; 3 fleece blankets to protect my early plants from cats/frost(!); 20 bamboo canes and some curved bamboo trellis! Brilliant!0

Anyone thinking about the Bramley needs to ensure there are two other apple trees nearby which flower at the same time.
A1novice.
Put the tree outside and keep it outside unless there is a frost in the next two weeks. That will ensure that the tree does not produce loads of sappy growth that is going to attract aphids.
i would be inclined to be really mean to yourself. if you get any flowers this year, enjoy, then remove any fruit that has set apart from one of two just to check that what you have got is what you bought.
Hi - Does this apply to all apple trees? I went to poundland today and got a golden delicious tree for £4.99, but i have no other fruit trees in my garden, does that matter? Also, what is the best area to place it in, and when should i plant it? (I am a total novice and may have taken up too much with fruit trees an allotment and raised beds in the garden)

Hello Megansmum. Just had a check and Golden Delicious is indeed self fertile. Am not an expert but should think that you should plant it now as most places sell fruit trees at the optimum time for planting and that window is just about to close, many garden sites are now stopping to take orders for them. Hope you have success.0

Thanks for that advice A1novice, I will get the tree planted tomorrow. I just watched Gardeners world on BBCIplayer - i wish i had watched it BEFORE i planted my potatoes into rubble sacks!! Oh well, this "growing your own" is quite a learning curve. At the end of the day it seems to be my head that hurts, not my back! Tomorrow I sow my first lettuces and tomatoes.
Question: My brussels have been in for a few weeks, should they have long gangly stems and look like they will fall over? (They also have 2 leaves and are just sprouting a third) - anyone offer any advice on this please?
Thanks and happy sowing all.2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!
