  • These are the pop-up garden waste bins i am using for early potatoes, 3 in each. They are approx 33cm wide and 40-45cm deep and just needed some holes in the bottom.

Thats a great idea, I saw some in mine the other day, and wondered if they would be ok to use as I would like to start growing potatoes.

A question though, does it matter what type of potatoes you use & do you make big holes in the bottom or just for drainage like with a fork - sorry if thats a bit of a dumb question, but it all new to me!

I don't grow potatoes but do grow peppers, chillies and tomatoes.

Here's a basic link of what you do:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_growingtomatoes1.shtml

You grow peppers, chillies and tomatoes the same way but it's more important to keep peppers and chillies seeds warm, and their seeds take 2-3x as long to germinate as tomatoes. You need to sow them this month.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

  • An alternative to the poundland bags for spuds are Ikea bags, if you have one near you. Large bags are about 25p!

Now that is worth it. Might pop in tomorrow.

Do not think much of the cloches though as the ones I have seen were blown all over the place in the winds the other weekend.

  • Just been to my local Poundstretcher and got a Stella Cherry tree for £4.99! It is about 5feet tall and already has some growth on it so it suggests it has some life in it. It is on a root stock and the label says it should reach 10ft when mature so not an unweildy size. They had other trees on sale, including Cox, Bramley and a Conference pear.
Can't wait to plant it out. Am looking forward to my own cherries, 'though probably wont have any this year. :j

Anyone thinking about the Bramley needs to ensure there are two other apple trees nearby which flower at the same time.

    A1novice.

Put the tree outside and keep it outside unless there is a frost in the next two weeks. That will ensure that the tree does not produce loads of sappy growth that is going to attract aphids.

i would be inclined to be really mean to yourself. if you get any flowers this year, enjoy, then remove any fruit that has set apart from one of two just to check that what you have got is what you bought.
