The bulls seem to be the most abusive, but they justify it by saying "Well, three years ago when house prices were going up, the Bears were abusive to us so we're getting them back". It doesn't seem to register with them when you point out that the person they're abusing was not a member back then, and actually when you look at their profile, neither were they!

    You can't be serious

lol, I got my bears and bulls mixed up :rotfl:

Ok, I admit it, I'm trying to stop all the personal attacks on myself by 'selling out' and becoming a bear. "You bulls started it!! You abused us first!!"

I'm not so sure it's the bulls. About a year or so ago this board was controlled by !!!!!!? and CarolT. If anyone wanted advice about house buying, BTL or simply had a different viewpoint they were bullied and intimidated until they left. A few managed to stand up to these bully's and were not so easily scared away. Now if anyone has a different view, they are branded trouble makers.

My fault completely. I have always thought that is was ridiculous and divisive to pidgeon hole people into two camps. As you say, is was !!!!!! who decided to use this term and that was mainly to label those who agreed with him as "Bears" and anyone who disagreed with him as "Bulls". At one point it was like being on West Side Story. This rubbish has lessened quite significantly since he stopped posting.

    Sorry misskool :o

My fault - I was interested in the bear / bull thing.

I think I would come under the bull category but I wont post about it so that I don't take it off topic again :)

Can I please ask users to keep this thread on topic?

Personally, I am loathe to delete posts (as otherwise get accused of being a Nazi, power hungry, censorship or moderating too heavily).

I was aware of the abuse functionality, but I doubt many users are.

In general reasonable posts should never be deleted, but I think this board would be well served if a ruling that any post accusing another poster of being a sock puppet was moved to a special purpose thread on the board. And any post abusing (not disagreeing) another member was deleted. It is well within the existing rules of the board to do this. I doubt you'd need to do it for all that long before the character of the board changed.

I think 90% of boards on the site have less potential to become an outright fight than this board. I doubt anyone ever has an argument on the competitions board, for example.

I think those are good ideas tomterm, but I think we are supposed to be adults and that absolutely the best idea would be for a great deal of "growing-up" to be done;) and for the users to make the effort needed to clean up their act and the board.

Personally, I quite like abusive posts to be left in place on the forum. My reason is that when someone has behaved like an @rsehole, then I believe it needs to stay so that people may judge them by their attitude. Just a quirk of mine:D .

Last night I saw repeated childish tantrums from posters who "claim" to know what they are talking about and to be "intellectually superior" to those in DT. I also saw unwarranted nastiness to the host of this site because they were being threatened with the loss of their dummy. I doubt it will worry them, but one or two lost the respect I had previously had for their opinions, and one (who had already rather slipped in my esteem recently) found himself plummeting to the depths of sulky schoolboy in need of a good slippering.

Folks, if you want respect for yourselves, then you have to be willing to give it as well. Personally I admire Martin for his restraint yesterday: I admit that had I been subjected to the slagging off he was for daring to suggest a possible move in view of how off-topic this board often becomes, then I think I might have been tempted to tell those taking advantage of my site where to put themselves:D .

We need the "too up themselves" to accept that they are nowhere near the big fish that they think they are, and that the move to DT would only make them equally small fish but in a slightly bigger pond and for those obsessed with sp's to just get over themselves and read the posts not come here to form "alliances". In other words - all the pettiness needs to stop, all the childishness needs to stop and we need to return the board to the useful tool it was not the playground it has become.

Some people owe Martin apologies as well: but I suspect their arrogance would make that totally impossible for them.

As it stands at the present time, the board has little to offer anyone becaue of the pathetic infighting - and I say this as someone who until recently did prefer the standard of intellectualism herein. By their own actions the petty have actually relegated the standard of the board to way below the worst of what goes on on the more serious threads in DT and how they can stand by their claims of intellectual superiority now, in view of that, baffles me.
