Wine Boxes in Luggage - Air Travel

Options
I am about to save a bit of money on our forthcoming cruise by taking 2 boxes of wine onboard, the problem is I have to put them in my suitcase as the boxes are not available in the shops where we sail from.

Are they perfectly safe, suitably packed in a sutcase, or would the pressure in the aircraft cause a spectacular "wine burst". Any thoughts???

    I'm biased from bitter experience...

When I was 6, my dad decided to bypass the duty free allowances by taking the stuffing out of my teddy so that he could hide an extra litre of whisky in it. The first that my mum, brother and I knew was when the police boarded the plane and took my dad away.
As you can guess, the bottle had broken in the hold damaging a number of people's suitcases and I was presented with the remnants of my soggy teddy in a carrier bag.

Don't risk it. It's really not worth it. And surely the answers to the previous thread you posted will have been of assistance?

Logistics aside, most cruise lines would take objection to this. They don't allow you to take your own booze on board.

    Tad confused?

Are you flying or sailing or both?

The whole non-pressurised aircraft baggage hold is a myth, consider that if you travel with pets the animals are stored in the luggage hold and you dont hear about poddles going pop do you?

Therefore if you are flying you will have no problem with any ill effects on your bottles, assuming you can get them past the baggage handlers.

I flew to Dubai about 7 weeks ago, with a wine box. It was fine. Keep an eye on the weight of the case though. My friend who has an apartment in Dubai takes one or two every time she goes there. Like me, she wraps it in a few plastic bags and then in bubble wrap. Pack it near the towels and your fine!

I've never been on a cruise, so can't speak with authority. However I would be surprised if they would get away with banning their own customers from bringing the duty free purchases on board. A few friends have been on cruises and I am sure that I would have heard about this?

Sadly most cruise ships do this (although you can purchase spirits etc onboard at reasonable prices on the ones I have been on)- if you purchase booze offshore they take it from you as you reboard to kindly 'store' for you until the night before leaving (so you can pack it) only way to 'smuggle' it on is as OP suggests and having it in hold case.

It depends on the cruise line. I think Carnival confiscate it although P&O allow a reasonable amount.

We flew to Southampton and shopped for vodka and a wine box at Asda there before boarding the P&O ship to save the weight in our luggage.

They have a seperate pressurised and heated part of the hold for live cargo

Sorry, it was my bad sentence structure. I am flying to Venice where I am boarding a cruise ship. There is no problem about taking a boxed wine aboard this ship, although there are others who confiscate.

Yes, its Princess..they are ok with bringing a reasonable amount of wine aboard. I was just a bit worried about the effects of pressure on a boxed wine, you know the 3 litre ones.I mean....have you seen an unopened bag of crisps when you are at 37000 feet..:rotfl:
