    Thanks again for all the comments and advice - i think these specialist shops are the ones to look in - just a shame they aren't all next door to each other so you can run from one to the other to make a direct comparison and choose your favourite!

    If you're looking for a 40 inch TV with great SD quality, get the sony 40W5500/5710 (john lewis stock the 5710 model, the only difference between the two is the colour of the speaker grille).

    It's got great SD quality, USB ports for photographs and videos and 100hz refresh rate. I adore the tv.
