I've been reading web pages trying to find the optimum room temperatures for health. Apparently the living room should be 21°C, the bedroom 18° (70F/64F) My bedroom certainly gets a lot colder, as our warm air heating makes such a racket during the night that I turn it off. No wonder I get sinusitis every winter.

Good Lord! I never had the thermostat above 14 degrees all last winter. Thank goodness for warm sweaters and thermal undies and socks!

To me, below 16 is cold, but last winter we had our daytime temp at about 20/21 degrees. Sometimes it ran away to 23 but it was so nice then not to have to hide under the blanket on the settee, and to feel more comfy.
I get quite sad if I'm too cold, and it's dark outside, quite miserable.

This year I'm scared of the gas bill coming in and us not being able to pay it.
I'm feeling a nip sitting here now so I'll have to add another layer.

All hail the hot water bottle!

This was precisely the reason I had the thermo at only 14 degrees. Last winter's heating bill came in at lower than the year before's. I think my sigh of relief could be heard from down the street: I was SO worried. I'm absolutely determined not to spend any more this year. And thanks for reminding me Barneysmom: I need a new hot water bottle

BitterAndTwisted, I just noticed you're from London. I work in London a lot and when I get to the M25 I alwasy notice it's warmer than where I live in north of stoke on Trent :)

Wow, that's a long old trek. I lived in Stoke for a while and having family in London, did the journey a few times.

Another thing I noticed when you hit London besides the change in temperature, is the polution. You can smell all the car fumes.

That is quite a trek. My OH lives in Stoke and I live in London and even tho its only a coupla hrs on the motorway it feels like the end of the world..I used to get picked up by them n driven up to Stoke regularly but lately they are so overworked and tired that they can't spare the time to drive down n back.:undecided I feel like spending an eternity and getting the National Express to surprise them but I don't have a key..I miss my cold winters up there.

I like the house warm, especially the sitting room. I decided, long ago to have a small 2 bedroomed house and heat it well, rther than freeze in a larger property like when i was a teenager at home and dad wouldnt have the heating on much due to cost. mum would put it on full belt when he went out to work, she couldnt dry washing othrwise and he always used to moan and complain about it being on.

What worked for me last winter was making the kids put on jumpers and long trousers and socks, buying us all slippers and actually wearing them, fleeces on the sofas and old duvets under the bottom bed sheets.

Luckily our hot water pipes go under the kids' bathroom floor so it's always warm and toasty in there when they have a bath or shower.

This year I shall be doing all the same things I expect, poss not the hot water bottle so often though as I have a new OH who is very very warm and much more fun to cuddle!

This is , I think, the first thread where hot water bottles have been mentioned lol, Im glad its not just me who adores her hoggy! This year OH is more disabled than last so I have to be prepared, one thing I didnt have to deal with last year was him travelling by wheelchair so am wondering what will work best? Need to keep him warm and dry! He is only 54 so he wont have the rain coat type things for in his chair 'cos thats what old biddys have'

  • What's a "raincoat type thing for in his chair"? What about those nylon rainproof trousers people wear when cycling? They should keep him dry in the rain if he's sporting a rainproof jacket over them. I don't think that would make him look too much like an old biddy
