West Coast Road Trip - Who Else Has Done It?

Finding a hotel/motel to spend the night will be the easiest part of your trip, they are everywhere and as long as you dont leave it too late in the day to book in you should have no trouble getting rooms, remember it is the room you pay for not per person so just ask for twin beds and share a room.
Are you sticking to cities or do you want to see some of the many sights along the route?
When at San Fran you should head for Death Valley NP, Yosemite NP and Sequoa NP allowing at least a day in each.
When in Vegas give youself a couple of days at the Grand canyon.
If you go to Utah you should go see Bryce canyon NP, Zion NP, Glen Canyon and Lake Powell, Canyonlands NP and a day trip to one of my all time favourites, Antelope Canyon just outside Page AZ.
I could list a whole lot of places to visit but I doubt if you will have enough time and as I am of a differnt generation you would probaly not be doing the same kind of road trip as I have done.0 -
Hi there,
Me and 2 mates did a West Coast road trip last Spring and loved it. We didn't do as much as you're planning. We started and ended in LA. Up to San Francisco across to Vegas, Grand Canyon then back to LA. We did it in an RV, about 2500miles in all. Great time.
Can't help on Hotels but we used roadtripamerica.com great for route planning etc..
Enjoy it you jammy so and so!!;)0 -

pretty much yes , theres hotels and motels everywhere compared to here
it would be a shame to have to keep to a route or time schedual over a certain hotel
maybe book the first couple of nights to settle in , then go with the flow
cheapest places will be family owned and prob not take online reservations anyway0 -

I've sent this thread to a good mate of mine who is a native of Seattle and will be returning home in a month's time. This is his advice...and I hope this helps you.Depending on which way he is going, I would think that it would be down highway 101, which is never more than a couple miles from the beaches. Just buy a few tents and some sleeping bags and camp out on the beaches all the way down (as long as you have your wits about you). Stop in some of the great, weird, amazing places all the way down. They will know them when they see them. The thing about plans and traveling is that people become obsessed with them, which is why I don't necessarily like to travel in groups because there is always one jack*** that makes a plan and pouts if it is not adhered to. My idea for another trip like that is...if you are heading south. As you travel, you will meet people and who knows what will happen after that.
One of the favorite trips I had in Europe was I was going to rail from southern Italy to Norway. I never made it to Norway I made it as far as Germany, met some people from the south of France and ended up going there and having a ball.
But 101 is an amazing trip. Nice people all the way down. And I have had some great times on various Native American reservations along the way. As long as you treat them with respect they will do so in turn.0 -
Thank you for asking him blue, we will be sure to take that route.0

are you speaking from experience? if so, can you recommend me anywhere you have stayed in these cities. :]
yeah that is definitely true though, i don't want the hotel set dates to dictate how long we spend in each place.0 -
However Vegas is different and if cost is an issue then it is usually much cheaper to book ahead than turn up on spec, especially at the weekends.0

Please take a look at the forum on this website:

I've used this for our last 2 trips and you will be getting ideas from locals who know the place far better than most.0 -

You will find a HUGE amount of info on there. One of the moderators is a Brit and he's done a lot of travel in the US. I'm sure they'll help you out.0
