if you are going from San Fran to LA and then you have to do the Pacific Coast Highway . if you are heading to Montrey area from SF this is a great place to visit ( very near Santa Cruz ) . can be a tad hard to find but trust me , make the effort to seek it out.

if you are travelling a lot in California a up to date "rough guide" travel book is invaluable IMO . i never take a road trip in USA without a rough guide .

they also do a Pacific northwest guide as well

a very good value for money investment , and you can recoup most of the cost of the books when you get home , by re sellling them on Ebay .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

We had a great time touring the Four Corners (New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah) a few years back. Most of the time we were on the Navajo reservation and had no problems at all - the scenery was magnficent. I don't know what PolishBigSpender is talking about. There are limited hotel rooms available in some areas like Monument Valley so need to book in advance at busy times. Also there are several different times zones along the way and if you are booking excursions etc, you need to be well up on which time zone you are in that day not to miss it.

Many people (myself included) have traveled the Western States of USA extensively.

The problem is it is such a vast area and there are so many issues to discuss to regurgitate it all would make this thread a hundred pages or more.

I would kindly advise you to use the search feature on this forum. You will find a wealth of information which will prove invaluable to the planning and experiance of your holiday - for example its not worth visiting Kayenta ;)

If you need clarity or additional information then please come back and post your queries and hopefully they will be answered for you.
