If no disks were sent with the laptop, but you have a Vista genuine certificate of authenticity (e.g. on a label on the bottom of the laptop) you most likely also have a (manufacturer provided) recovery partition on the laptop, which is separate from your Windows installation.
Typically new Windows laptops have two ways of restoring them:
- A recovery partition (an area hidden on the hard disk - this is NOT the same as Windows restore, but recovers all of the Windows part of the disk to a new state).
- From a self (laptop) burned Windows "recovery CD" you are told in the laptop instructions to create as soon as possible - which also contains the same contents as the recovery partition. This is not the same as a genuine windows disk - it also contain the drivers specific to your laptop (i.e. allows it to control the hardware) and cannot be installed on another machine. To create this is usually quite simple in Windows and requires a few clicks on a "wizard" (on a HP laptop this is in a "recovery manager" application). This is in case you bust both hard disk partitions - and it's so the laptop manufacturer doesn't need to provide a genuine Windows disk.
Google for your laptop make and number plus "recovery partition". Since you probably won't have made the recovery disk I guess your only (legal) choice is to hope the recovery partition didn't get fried. If it is still there, a special key combination on switching the laptop on will start the recovery process from the partition and put Windows back onto it for you.
Hope this helps.sparkleworld wrote: »Thank You so much for your replies.

The asking for administrator / password will be to access/ repair the old installation. Go through the restore factory defaults settings.
Remember once you get it up and running you'll need to run windows update and install your Anti virus and Firewall software ASAP, before it gets knobbled again.
It's also worth checking the paperwork and the options in the laptop tofind out how to burn the recovery media to disk, otherwise you'll have to buy it if the hard drive dies totally.0 -
i Think its dead now as its refusing to boot up and asking for the windows disc to be installed .

I'm guessing here you've tried to repair it. Do the F8 things again this time select restore factory defaults, that should restore it to as it was before you powered it on.
If that fails it's most likely a hardware issue and (and I don't mean this to sound bad but it will) beyond your technical skill, and you need to seek help. Where abouts in the UK are you?0 -
10 PRINT "Try to fix the laptop"sparkleworld wrote: »Please is there a BASIC step by step guide to this somewhere.
20 INPUT "Is the computer still broken? (Y or N): ", X$
30 IF X$ = "Y" OR X$ = "y" THEN GOTO 10
40 PRINT "Yay! It's Fixed"
50 END
Hahaha couldn't resist :j0 -
