Please could somebody Post BASIC instructions on Broken laptop.

Hi
Please could somebody with an ounce more commom sense and knowledge than myself help/advise me.
yesterday afternoon Son's laptop appeared to die.

Turned it on and a black screen with white writing appeared informing that there was a problem with windows and it had to close .

So restarted laptop and then a blue screen with writing appeared and disappeared so fast I couldn't read what it says.

Then the black screen appeared again giving the original statement so i pressed restart windows and the screen just goes blank...

Tried yet again in safe mode(whatever that is)

Please is there a BASIC step by step guide to this somewhere.

P.s can't get any further on laptop so have had to use big PC to post this just in case you were wondering.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this

Regards

Not really, theres a few things it could be.

Most likely windows is trashed and you'll need to do a system restore / re-installation to fix it. How you do that depends on what the maker supplied disc wise and you'll need to read the documentation that came with the PC to work out how to do that. Dfferent makes use different techniques, some supply windows disks, some supply image disks, some supply nothing and the image in on the hard drive and you need to press certain keys as it starts to access it.

Bear in mind that this process will probably wipe *EVERYTHING* from the PC, so if you need to save anything you'll need to get the drive installed in another PC, but thats probably beyond what you want to do technically.
  • Thank You so much for your replies.

This is just a laptop he soley uses for playing Yughioh online and chatting online with -as its just a windows vista basic,
Not really anything esle of importance stored on it.
Use big PC with seperate hard drive for important/sentimental stuff.

Absolutely no discs were sent with laptop
    ( Its a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li2727)
Just has a proof of licence certificate of authenticity.

Thankyou again for your replies, It's very much appreciated.

this depend what disks you have really most PC's these days come with a system repair/re-install on them

If you don't have this it makes it a little more difficult

At the moment we are kind of assuming that this is a software issue it may actually be a hardware issue but you need to rule one or the other out to be able to find / rectify the problem

A google search seems to say that laptop has them on the hard drive, and you should have burned your own copies to DVD.

You can try during the boot process, press the F8 key at very frequent intervals, until the menu "Advanced Boot Options" appears. That will give you the "Repair your Computer" function. Once Windows has loaded a few files, "System Recovery Options" will come up, select the option "Fujitsu Siemens Computers Recovery" with the sub-item "Easy backup and recovery of your system". and away you go...

Once it's up and running make your own DVD's for of therestore disks and keep them safe. You can only make one copy..
  • Thank you Gj Chester
After several attempts I have managed to get the advanced boot options screen up My choices are

    Safe mode
    Safemode with networking
    Safe Mode with command prompt

    Then
    Enable Boot logging
    Enable low res video
    Last known good configuration (advanced)
    Directory services restore mode
    Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
    Disable driver Signature enforcement

Please which one do I choose!

    Thank you

    No.

Try tapping F10 or F11 while its booting and it should take you directly into the recovery menu.

Otherwise if this doesnt work check the BIOS (F2 or DEL during start up) and make sure that the recovery mode is ACTIVATED. Some laptops come with an option to turn off access to the recovery partition for security.

    Hope this helps.
    Scrimping and saving!
