Rented Accomodation - Housemate left light on!!!!

Options
Hey there!

I'm a student, with a few months left on my contract.

A housemate seems to have disappeared for the summer! No one talks to him, but he doesn't have any exams and at the end of last week disappeared off in his car and hasn't come back!

The problem? He left his bluming light on!!! Landlord hasn't put in energy efficient bulbs in his room and he hasn't either.... No idea how long he'll be gone!

Spoke to landlord about electricity costs, and he told me we'd have to work it out between ourselves as it's not his problem at all! So I'm going to have to try and get hold of the guy and tell him to pay more towards the next bill etc...

But more worryingly, the landlord won't do anything about it as of yet. No one else has a key to his room obviously (apart from landlord maybe?), and the housemate isn't answering his phone or replying to messages!

Does anyone know how much physical cost it would be for a houselight left on for a week, 2 weeks etc....?

Thanks very much! Advice would be much appreciated.

A 100 watt bulb will get through 2.4 kWh (2 units on the meter) in one 24-hour day. If your electricity costs 12p/unit, than this would be (12*2.4) per day - or 28p. So about £8.50/month.
  • Wow, now I feel stupid!

Ah well. Had no idea it was that cheap really.

lol not a science student then???

(it's probably only a 40W light bulb too, so even cheaper :D)

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    How did you guess ;)?

Saying that I'm a computing student, so I feel I should have known better! Ah well.

I'm still going to have to try and get the idiot to pay more towards the bills. Before he left he left the gas on a lot, and always left lights on etc....

    Thanks anyway :D

Hey, when I got my Masters degree in Computing, we were considered engineers... ;) (so you definitely should have known better ;) )

If you aren't a final year student, find a better housemate for next year

Good luck with your degree and don't sweat about the light.
