run out of USB ports

I know the basic bits of computers, i.e how to turn it on and connect to internet and surf etc, but the tech stuff of how it works bafles me. I have just got broadband and need to connect the modem up but have run out of places to plug USB lead. Can you get something to give you more ports. ?

Only one thing to worry about with USB hubs, it may not give out the correct power needed for all the USB devices.

USB hubs that plug into the mains (for power) seem to be abit more compatible with certain devices.
  • I bought a USB hub from Poundland last week, thinking if it was crap it was only a pound I'd lost. But it's fine - it's USB 2.0 compliant, and devices still get their USB charge through it...

Depends on how much charge is required for the devices and if they need them all the time. Plugging a hub powered usb device such as a mouse, mp3 player, etc that doesn't have an external power supply may cause some problems.

The best option (assuming that you have a spare plug socket) is to look for a powered USB hub. You can pick a 7 port (seven extra USB sockets) powered USB hub on ebay for approx £10 (search for "7 Port USB 2.0 Hub")

I bought a USB hub (mains powered) about 2 years ago from ebuyer. It still works fine and only cost about £10. As said above, only go for one that has mains power otherwise it will drain your PC.

Many thanks, will have a go at finding it on Ebay.
  • You can also get a card that fits inside if you have a spare pci slot, i know it involves going inside the case but i found it easy to do and it added four usb2 slots.
