By the way, if you dont have helpful comments to add, why bother? Yeah so its 20p but the more people this happens to, the more people are done out of petrol. I thought this forum was supposed to be about helping people, not about being obnoxious and rude?

While i do agree with you, i think it would be foolish of us to encourage to spend time that could be spent making money etc as well as using up to treble the money lost in order to prove a point. It is not being unhelpful, it is being realistic!

I am confused tho, if the reading was 0 to start with, when was the 20p added?

The dial started going up when I put the pump into the car, but no petrol was actually dispensed at that point.

as well as using up to treble the money lost in order to prove a point. - Its more about stopping it happening to other people to be honest, the 20p I am not so bothered about, its the principle of other people being ripped off xx

Do you think this was done deliberately? Go in at a different time and speak to the manager or go to themain store and advise them.

I thought at the time it was just a mistake and this is why I wrote to the manager to let him know of the situation but a few people I know seem to have had this same problem, or have had friends in the same situation from the same garage.

Are you sure you had less petrol than you should have done? Just because you saw the 20p added, may not mean you didn't get the 20p worth of fuel. Check your receipt - see how much fuel was dispensed and then work out whether what you paid is equal to that number of litres at the price per litre.

Having said all that, life is short....fill up somewhere else, don't worry about it.

Umm, that's not how it works. The system will take the 'litres dispensed' and calculate the price directly from that. There's no way it would display a price not corresponding to the volume of petrol it thinks it's dispensed. Following your method, the receipt would be correct 100% of the time, no matter how messed up the pump is.

The OP is saying that before any petrol was dispensed it displayed 20p; I'm sure by that he means at the same time it displayed about 0.22 litres, not that it said 20p and 0 litres.

Sorry you've misunderstood. The receipt does not calculate the volume of fuel dispensed from the price. If what you said is true the price shown on the pump and the price on the receipt would be different.

The volume of fuel you have received is on the receipt. The price you paid is on the receipt. You can use the 2 figures to work out the amount per litre.

Unless you are saying that when this extra 20p was added the volume dispensed reaing on the pump pump also jumped to 0.2litres which the poster did not say happened. Only if both readings jumped, or if the numbers on the receipt did not match what was shown on the pump would it not be possible to work out what you were charged per litre. Both these possibilities are unlikely.

Sounds like a dodgy pump to me - not uncommon in Tescos.

I've used some Tesco Petrol Stations where the pumps were knackered and it took about 1 minute to dispense 2 litres of fuel into the car.

No, I am not saying that. I am saying that before the petrol started coming out, the reading jumped to 20p and around 0.22 litres. I'm saying that the computer used the volume and the price per litre to calculate the price, not the other way around.

I mean it's really simple: Price = volume x price per volume, I'm sure you agree with that. The pump dispenses the volume, reports to the computer the volume, the computer uses this and the price per volume to calculate the price. There is no way the price per litre will be wrong, as this is a number input into the computer by hand, not measured or anything. The error has to be with the measuring of the volume, as you may have noticed everyone else is suggesting. There is NO way that something as highly regulated as a petrol pump would have a computer flaw which would allow 20p to come from nowhere, and even if it did, it's far more likely that there'd be a problem with the pump measuring system.

Almost correct. The volume of fuel the computer THINKS you have received is on the receipt.

I am telling you that when the OP comes back and reads this he will say that is what happened, assuming he noticed.

Tesco receipts even tell you the price per litre on it; so if you are right and it turned out that didn't match the price per litre he calculates on the receipt then he'd have quite easy recourse.
