Tesco Value - Good/Bad Items [merged]

I used to think that Tesco was pretty good value for money when it came to meat, but since switching to online meat suppliers, there is a surprising difference between their values.
I know not many of us buy per KG, but still when you have got the likes of Westin Gourmet and Abel & Cole offering their beef steaks for more than £3 cheaper per kg, Tesco is not as cheap as you think.0 -
I think the curry sauce is decent enough and for only 8p a real bargain.i make veggie curry with it loads and never had any complaints!0

Has anyone found it to be true that the general rule is the less processed a product the cheaper you can go without it being horrible? For instance value onions are fine, but value sausages will taste more of evil than sausage!
Totally agree with that! I will generally buy value potatos, onions, carrots, mushrooms, tomatos (esp cherry toms), apples and pears. They don't last as long as some more expensive ones but that probably means there is less in the way of preservatives so not necessarily a bad thing.
Also buy value biscuits (have tried custard creams, bourbons and choc digestives),
foil (thinner than the expensive stuff but usually fine),
childrens fromage frais (occasionally - I'm trying to get the kids onto hm yoghurt),
chocolate mousse (occasional treat again),
probiotic yoghurt drink (ditto),
white rolls (keep in freezer for emergency lunches),
oats and rice crispie equivalent for baking only (tried a blind test but even I could see they didn't look appetising),
cooking bacon (I sort through the packs to find the type I need - back or streaky, I've even had gammon offcuts before),
butter (for baking although that's gone up in price now so I just buy anch0r on offer for 2p more),
nappy sacks (only for dog walking now),
sandwich bags,
bin liners,
and dog food (which is not a frightening colour unlike their own brand "premium" stuff).
Gosh, a longer list than I thought!
Like another poster, in my store there seems to be less of the blue and white value stuff and more of their "discount brands" which are often no cheaper then the rest of the shelf.
Personally don't buy value loo roll - it's more like a quilted one - very soft but it got used up far more quickly so false economy. Also don't like value wipes, hairspray or washing up liquid.
Thanks for resurrecting the thread, it looks like there are still more things worth trying.

Didn't think about buying nappy sacks for dog walking, great idea, how much are they?
Re the value loo roll, it's not quilted or puffed up, I know what you mean, I bought some from the pound shop that was like that and it disappeared so fast, the rolls look a decent size but because it's kind of 'airy' it doesn't last 2 seconds, but the Tesco one is flat, maybe they have changed it since you last bought it? I bought the big pack (12 pack I think it is?) over a week ago and still have half left, so it's lasting really well, and is working out less than half the price of the standard one in comparison to how long it's lasting for us, it might be worth you giving it another try.0 -

Thanks for that, have been getting the c00p ones when they're bogof but I'll give the value ones another go.
Re nappy sacks, I haven't bought any for a while but according to the website, they're 54p for 300. Thinner than expensive ones and not scented but they do the job very nicely!

Thanks, that's a great price, as long as they hold the poop and don't split, that's all that matters!0 -

My thoughts exactly! I've never had one split and my boys certainly provide a challenge sometimes...
Just read back and apparently the 12 roll pack of loo roll is different to the 4 roll pack so maybe that's where I went wrong? I shall report back anyway!

That's great, nothing worse than a split poo bag!
Yep I read that about the 4 pack too, the 12 pack will last us 2 weeks, that's for a family of 4 with everyone home as it's school holidays, so great value. :d:0 -

Beware the Discount Brands range, it isn't necessarily cheaper. I've noticed a few instances where it is more expensive than the Value range and even where it's more expensive than the Tesco's own brand range. I always check the price per 100g/per kilo/whatever units it's in, which is listed on the shelf edge tag in small writing under the price. Some of them do have one item as £ per 100g and the next as £ per kilo, but even I can easily work that out and I'm rubbish at mental arithmetic.0 -
