There is a similar thread in Old Style Money Saving but, as there are currently threads for Asda Smart Price and Sainsbury Basics, I thought this might be a good place to add a thread. I went through the existing thread and compiled a list of good/maybe/bad items.

Coco pops - Bad- no taste!

Mayo-Good-As long as you use it with something else ie cheese,ham and mayo sarnie. But not good if used as a dip.

Ice lollies,choc ices,splits etc -Good-kids don't know the difference!

Tinned grapefruit-Good-great for breakfast or with other fruit.

We looked and about on par with calories, fat etc as a special k bar!!! Can you believe it

I'm sure someone will correct me and say I'm wrong tho. Mayb I just thought it was so I could eat them for breakfast

Mint sauce is ok too - no difference to any other, just maybe a bit runnier than some.

Chocolate & Apricot cereal bar - Good, Its actually just as good as any other cereal bar I feel.
Caramel Wafer - Good, you get the odd harder one, but that is quite rare, I feel that they are also just as good as other caramel wafers.

We like the breakfast juice, it is OJ and grapefruit. It is sometimes cheaper than the value OJ.
Tinned tomatoes are good.
Tin foil and sandwich bags - value ones are quite good, I dont see the point on spending more money on things like this.
I would never buy value cereal. The value weetabix are awful

I've just bought 500gm of bacon for cooking for 87p today. It was at the bottom of the bacon bit next to the cheap streaky bacon. I haven't opened it yet but it looks fine for the quiches I was going to make, the rest I'll put with some tinned tomatoes, garlic & onions for a pasta sauce. I usually buy back bacon or the streaky if it looks OK, it's only going to get chopped up so this looks great.

Cooking Bacon (as mention above) - really good - useful for sauces etc and you could use it in a fry up/for sandwiches if you don't mind it in bits!

Vanilla Ice Cream in a tub - (says bad above) but I actually quite liked it. - It's not haagen daas but its perfectly serviceable in a cone with a bit of raspberry sauce!

Loo Roll - good - absolutely fine and I prefer it to normal loo roll. Lasts much longer. Obviously not for bog roll snobs!

Lamb Mince - horrible - used it to make ratatouille and it had little bits of bone/gristle in, made it uneatable.

I disagree about bananas.


Standard bananas are priced at 68p/kg.

Market value bananas priced at 66p per bag - weighing between 600g and 900g - that I could see.
That works out at between 73p and £1.10 per kg .

Or put another way -
a pack of 'value:rotfl:' bananas weighing 600g. Cost 68p

600g of standard bananas. Cost 41p
