antivirus- free vs paid

Hi, I know this has been asked before but im too pregnant and uncomfy to read through loads of search results so I hope you lot dont mind me asking again! My Norton Internet Security 2002 subscription has expired and I really dont want to be paying £34 to get another year. I have looked through the 'security' thread quickly and see that loads of folk use free antivirus etc. Is it recommended by most of you to chuck out the NIS and go for free a/v and firewall or should I just pay the ransom to symantec??? avg will do the job and is totally free.

If you want 6 months free Norton, you can get it with the Google Pack, HERE . You only need to download the elements of the pack that you actually want - underneath the 'Download' button, there's a link that says 'Add or remove software', where you choose what to download. :j

Try not to use Norton as its a bit Bloated and can be a headache.

It was AGV I was thinking of going for... does it give enough protection? it just feels wierd after all these years thinking I was getting a better service cos I was paying for it and now im going to chuck out something Ive spent so much money on and replacing it with a freebie!!! Which firewall do any of you suggest? Im not too sure about relying on windows firewall .....

AVG is fine for the average user. If you want the best, Nod32 is very good (£28).

Combine AVG, with a router (provides the hardware firewall), a software firewall (such as Kerio, it's free) and anti-spyware such as Counterspy (£15) and you shouldn't really ever get a problem.

Oh, and make sure you use a browser like Opera or Firefox.
