  • I can't see the wheels on my car, but I can drive clean over speed cushions without bouncing.

Its the same with the bonnet - experience.

If you can see the bumper of the car in front then you haven't hit it.

Same logic when reversing into a space, if you can see the bumper of the car behind you haven't hit it.

I had an SD1 many years ago, and you couldn't see the front or back of that either.
But it had real bumpers, so you didn't need to really. Just put it in drive, off the brake, when it stopped, put in reverse for a bit.

In my Ford Focus when I'm reversing it looks like I'm an inch away from the car behind me then when I get out I'm actually about three foot away. Sometimes I try to reverse back a bit more after checking but the mirrors still make me think I'm about to hit it that I often leave it jutting out a little bit. I've had it over a year and can't get used to it.

I tend to reverse park anyway, I find it easier  reversing the TR7 is easy, especially with the top down because I could probably physically touch the car behind :rotfl:

I turn the headlights on - I also use that if I want to make sure the front corner's clear of something before I move away if you get what I mean.

Or you could use the technique my mum used to use to make sure the back end of the car was in the garage - roll forward till you hit the front wall... she went through about 30 front number plates till we hung a tennis ball from the garage roof and told her to go forward till it was touching her windscreen.
