It's the law, 6 years is the limit.0 -
A question..a few years back we transferred our mortage from the halifax to a cheaper building society.
The halifax made various charges such as deeds retrieval, closing fee, letter charges etc..before they'd release the deeds to the new mortgage company.
As these charges were way over what it cost the halifax to move our mortgage, can I claim them back or do different rules apply to mortages?0 -
I am unsure how I stand after watching Tonight with Trevor McDonald, and am unsure if this is the right place to ask the question, as it is not a bank charge as such! About 2 years ago I purchased a conservatory. I took the finance deal with it. This had a penalty clause in it for early repayment. Which 6 months later I had forgotton about. I looked at my finances & could repay early. Rang the finance company, who told me there were no early repayment charges. A couple of weeks later I received a letter from the Conservatory people telling me I owed them around £1,500, as I had paid back early. I got this down to £750 approx, which I paid. Am I able to claim the £750 back from the Conservatory people?0

Because of the Statute of Limitations Act of 1980. A debt becomes statute-barred after 6 years. There is a growing trend of thought which says that since the banks concealed the charges were unlawful, that would bypass the Statute, but it hasn't been tried out properly. Fancing having a go?0 -
Someone was asking what the situation is with regards to Scottish registered banks.
Here's some useful info: http://www.govanlc.com/bankcharges.html0 -

I wish I could get in the CAG site to answer that. I'm sure s/one only just got their redemption fees back, but I don't know the details, I'm afraid. Sorry, can 't help you more at this point.0 -
Thank you mjanet, blindman and bookworm. I will be writing my letters and sending them out first class tomorrow.0

Visited the bank Saturday to discuss bank charges (To no avail).
Was advised (off the record) to send any letters by Special delivery as it was implied they could "accidentally" get lost before reaching the bank..0 -
