What would you do with Horlicks / malted milk powder?

I bought a supermarket brand of malted milk instead of good old Horlicks and needless to say, no one likes it:rolleyes:

I thought I might try it in biscuits/shortbread by swapping it with a tablespoon of flour but how would you use it up?

Help - it's a huge jar :o

my daughter successfully made the shortbread at the weekend and substituted 1oz of malted powder for flour and used about half an ounce less of sugar. They came out crunchy like when you use semolina (grammer?) but she was really disappointed that they didn't taste of maltesers - she had the chocolate ready to melt and coat the biscuits and thought she'd save herself a fortune from buying them :D

    apart from drinking it?

I bought the cheap asda version of Horlicks just to see if I could save pennies as I love Horlicks. However I really dont like the cheap version, but it wouldn't be very money saving if I just chucked it away. I cant even decide what it tastes like but its certainly nothing at all like my fav brand:o

So does any one have any ideas for it?

    Many thanks

No idea what it tastes like, and I love horlicks, too :)

Would it make any difference if you mixed it with the real stuff?

You can add a spoonful to a banana smoothie or a chocolate milkshake to make it maltier, or how about making a chocolate malteser cake?

    Cake
    150g light brown sugar
    100g caster sugar
    3 eggs
    175ml milk
    1tbsp butter
    2tbsp horlicks
    175g plain flour
    25g cocoa powder
    1tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp bicarb

Whisk the eggs and sugars; heat the milk, butter and horlicks in a saucepan until the butter melts but the mixture isn't boiling. Beat the horlicks mixture into the eggs, then fold in the dry ingredients. Divide between two sandwich pans and bake at 170 for 25 minutes. Allow to cool on a rack

    Icing
    250g icing sugar
    1tsp cocoa
    3tbsp horlicks
    125g butter
    2tbsp boiling water
    maltesers

Beat the icing sugar, cocoa and horlicks (or blend in the processor) with the butter and slowly add the water until you have a smooth buttercream. Use to sandwich and ice the cakes, then decorate with maltesers.

    Hope this helps!

  • I guess you could try taking it back and saying that it doesn't taste like it should??? It could be faulty, and most shops I know would give you a refund!

    Try Me Love Me

We are confident that you will love our ASDA brand and Extra Special food lines. However, on any of our food products bearing the 'Try Me, Love Me' logo, we will be happy to refund and replace the product if you are not 100% happy with it.

As quoted on the Asda website.

Does it have a 'try me, love me' sticker on it? If not, I would take it back anyway, and argue that they must know it's not that good!

I've never tried a cheap version of Horlicks but love the real stuff. I can never wait to make up the drink. I have the disgusting habit of eating it raw by the spoonful. Would your ASDA version taste better if you tried eating it rather than drinking it ??
