Is it not possible to use the payment as some sort of bargaining chip? i.e offer them partial payment as full and final settlement (a fairly low figure) and mention that the default really bothers you and see if they will remove it as a goodwill gesture if you can try and come up with the rest of the money.
Not sure if this works or not but it could be worth looking into before you pay as once they have your money they won't be interested.0 -

Basically it had to be paid today otherwise they would have started legal proceedings against me, so I have paid it the debt is clear and it was with a dca, not the cerdit card company, apart from this major mess up, my credit history is fine, I assume the reason that I have a low rating will be because of this and there is no way I can change that until 6 years later, it's fine, I never want to get a credit card ever again, believe me!
So even in todays market I should be able to get a sub prime one, I probably won't need one for another 2 to 2 years by which time I will hopefully be debt free!
So things might be ok then, I presume getting a mortgage is easier if you don't have any debts?0
